I'm going through a phase of interest in shows set in the southwestern desert or smaller town south. Anything kind of dusty and twangy. I've got one more season of Justified left and want to make a queue of stuff to line up for afterwards.

I was hoping they'd play this straight and let the ridiculous premise the the joke instead of having to ham it up so much. This could have been badass if they just let it essentially be like The Beastie Boys' Sabotage. 70's cop thriller.

The real nail in the coffin was killing the blong romantic interest for Rick in Alexandria because then they attached him to the sheboon and started jorkin themselves about how all their romances were interracial or faggot

The show is incredible. They do a great job of balancing thriller southern noir aspects with goofier humor. I only have one season left and I'm getting anxious about finishing it and having no more left (although I know they brought the show back with Justified: City Primeval).

Also on the list (in no particular order):
Sons of Anarchy
True Detective
Mr. Inbetween
Outer Range
Dark Winds
Deputy

He died the way he did in the comics, so at least there's that. Again, I wasn't attached to the character, but I couldn't fucking stand Negan as the big bad. My GF and I had a joke that every time he'd appear on screen we'd have to hunker down to listen to him deliver a fucking 5 minute soliloquy about how much of a badass he was.
>"WEEEEELL weeeeell WELL! What do we HAVE hear? Looks like SOMEONE isn't happy with their LIVING arrangement. Me? I like to consider myself a nice guy. I'd be happy to...look the other way and let y'all scatter to the wind. BUT LUCILLE HERE <swings baseball bat> disagrees, and she's MIIIIIGHTY thirsty...."
And so on. For minutes. Every fucking scene he appears in.

I finally watched it last year. It was a fun watch, but I'm with you...I think people suck its dick a little more than they probably should. Then again, I binge watched it. It might have been different if I had to wait and speculate between episodes and seasons.

I'm finally watching Lost too. I REALLY don't know what the fuck everyone loved about that show. I'm thankfully finally on the last season but I really didn't like it. I don't think I'm a fan of JJ Abrams' style of storytelling.

re: lost, I coudln't help but make fun of everything while watching it, but I did at least partially enjoy the first few seasons. Once some of the characters got off the island it got really fucking annoying and the time travel shit was infuriating. Through it all from S01E01 through the first half of season 06 (which is where I currently am), I fucking HATE Jack as a character. What an annoying little narcissistic shit.

I'd heard someone talking about how JJ Abrams doesn't necessarily go into things with a plan and his tactic is just to open mystery boxes and see where it leads. After watching a handful of things he's worked on, all I'll say is...you can fucking tell. Maybe he should start planning things out a bit more.

Granted, the possibility of that being the case was well above zero, but those are still the best scenes in those episodes so it's not that evocative of a complaint honestly. I'd rather listen to 5 Negan monologues than any convo between Rick and Michonne that has zero chemistry and nobody remembers

I'm not that interested in trying to dissect JJ's thought process. I think Jack was arguably the best and most interesting character besides maybe Locke, but I'm drawing from echos of thoughts since I haven't watched it in a decade. If memory serves the time travel stuff was a tiny fraction of the show.
Regardless, Lost isn't really an all time great show in terms of quality. It's more notable for how aggressively it exploited the episodic nature of television to make it the quintessential watercooler show in a way that was unmatched until GoT.

I don't really remember if they were a couple by the time I stopped watching or not. I think they might have been hooking up by that time, but I really stopped giving a shit. That guy with the lion was also getting on my nerves.

Michonne was kind of done dirty with her writing. She was a cool character initially with the samurai sword and leading her zombie brothers around on chains, but I think they had a hard time pivoting her character from super intense mostly non-verbal badass to more personable member of the group. It might have been able to work, but they would have had to soften her up over time and they didn't take care to do that. She made a better big sister to Coral than a fuck buddy to Rick.

I get that. Coming to the show late, I've only seen it after having already seen a bunch of shows that were influenced by it, so it's tough to place it in historical context.
When it was coming out, I had a roommate who used to religiously go to live screening events where they'd have themed drinks, a band called "Previously On Lost" would play a set of songs written about the last episode, and then everyone would watch the new episode live on a projector.

I think she was more cringe and edgy than cool with the whole samurai/zombie lord aspect, but other than that I agree. They wrote themselves into corner with how they portrayed her then couldn't write themselves out. Didn't help that the actress wasn't particularly good.
I don't even remember much about the lion guy. They kept killing off decent and interesting characters then introducing new shitty ones which is a death knell for shows with multiple pov. Then they ruined Rick by killing off the hot blond and making him share scenes with the ugly, cardboard monkey so that 90% of screentime was unwatchable.

Heroes came out swinging for the fences. Season 01 was incredible, but when you START the show with the fate of the world in peril, where the fuck do you go from there?

I'd heard that the show was originally supposed to be more like an anthology with each season featuring completely different characters, but the public liked the characters from season 1 so much they decided to keep rolling with it (mistake #2 after the whole "save the world" thing). But what really killed the show were the writers strikes. Season 3 was absolute dogshit because they hired scabs to write it and it fucking shows.

The rants are great and the actor does an incredible job bringing the character to life. He's pretentious and wordy but he plays it just right so there's never been a moment where I really think about the fact that it's an actor playing a part.

We don't see eye to eye on a lot, but I can agree with you there. She had a reasonably good character arc finding her sense of confidence, freedom, and became self sufficient with firearms, but then they completely Flanderized her and she became some cold calculating genius tactician and super assassin. it is one of the few shows where I noticed how much work they put into their action scenes and camera work.
They have a lot of action and it is very violent.
Also a parade of hot babes and most of them sleep with the main character and the sex scenes are... extensive.
I like to watch it in the gym on the phone, but sometimes I am getting paranoid that someone might look over and suspect me of watching porn on the exercise bike.

This is another one I wanted to like. It's essentially The Big Lebowski - The Show, but they don't really stick the landing. Apple seems to cut corners in very odd places, so while the cast is pretty stacked, the show loses out on a lot of basic cinematography. Scenes are sometimes shot awkwardly, timing could be tightened up, color grading and lighting need work and the sound is awful. The worst part is the atmospheric sound design, though. There are so many scenes that need ambiance so when a character walks from outdoors to inside you feel a subtle difference in the space (or a difference from the car to an apartment, etc). There's music, there's dialogue, and there's essential foley, but it's like someone forgot to add atmospheric sounds to most of the scenes so it feels very much like a rough cut of a student film. Just adding stuff like wind, light hums/buzzes, or treating the dialogue with a touch of reverb to make the voices feel like they're in a real room would do wonders.

Aside from that, I never felt like Patricia Arquette found her footing in the character. I don't think this was necessarily her fault. The dialogue she had to work with was a little too cocksure. We get that she's a druggie, something of a con, and has a sense of swagger that she abuses to get in and out of situations, but the character never got a moment to show true vulnerability.

It sucks. I think the premise was interesting, and in better hands, I think this show could have been really great. I've watched it twice because I want it to be good but it just isn't.

They're never getting done and it's partially HBO's fault. Some writers are architects where they plan everything out ahead of time. Others are gardeners where they plant seeds and see what grows. Martin is very much a gardener and he's said that once he knows how a story ends, he completely loses interest.
HBO made him tell them how he planned to end the series so in case anything happened (he died or didn't finish the books before the series caught up) they could finish the show. If suddenly having to commit to an ending didn't kill any motivation he had, certainly seeing the absolute piss poor way they went about getting there must have done it.

Martin was a successful writer, but he wasn't super rich. Now that the HBO series is out, he has more money than he can probably spend in his lifetime, he's old, and he wants to live it up. As much as it fucking sucks that we'll probably never actually get an end to the book series, I can't blame the guy.

This show had high and low points, but all things considered, it was reasonably good.
The plots followed various parts of the comics, but they did take some liberties. I think it was for the best. Garth Ennis has some cool ideas, but his actual writing always feels like it's lacking a bit. I know it will be controversial to say this, but I really like what they did with the Tulip character. She was kind of a wet blanket of a nothing character in the comics. She's more of a firecracker in the show, but has enough vulnerabilities and character flaws that she isn't some girl-boss mary sue.

It gets slow for some episodes, but I think the show ultimately stuck the landing.

I'll take your advice. It just sucks. I don't know why I like this show so much but it really ticks a lot of boxes for me. It probably has a lot to do with the music. Whenever I hear that dirty slide on a resonator guitar it makes a scene infinitely more badass.

He made $120 million from GoT series alone. He does $10 million a year in book sales. And god knows what that fat fuck is charging for all the other shit he is producing and writing for. I think a conservative estimate for him is $250 million +.

basically a mob flick but with cowboys and family drama in the style of murica fuck yeah porn.
it's pretty good at first but tends to drag on after season 3, before it completely jumps the shark after costner left the production.
the spinoffs are varying degrees from ok to laughably melodramatic just for the sake of it.
it's not bad per se, but some people might not enjoy the copious amounts of needless drama

I wish American shows would embrace limited series more. Keeping shows going until they peter out seems like a bad idea. I'd love if people would pitch a limited idea, finish that, then have the option to start another limited series (possibly picking up where the last left off) if it's really popular and the creators can imagine more. That way everything actually leads somewhere instead of just meandering while the showrunners hope they can keep it going for one more paycheck, er I mean season.

mini-series and anthologies are a thing. shit like american crime story, manhunt, true detective, american horror story, etc. have been quite popular throughout the last 10+ years.
in the case of yellowstone they decided to keep running it organically which meant they could introduce and experiment with plotlines as they went along to see what the audience enjoyed and emphasize on that or drop those plots that nobody wanted.
it also allowed them to see which characters are liked which then justifies spin-offs once the main series stalls or ends.
of course there's still problems with it, as you said - the continual squeezing out of runtime even if it doesn't make sense to repeat the same shit over and over or making it ridiculous.
they should have stuck to their original outline, if they even had a proper one, and kept introducing side characters on the go.
instead they kept dragging it on for at least 2 seasons longer than necessary

Yeah, there are a handful of anthology series, but I meant I wish that was more of like a standard model. Partially to keep shows from running forever on life support, but also to ensure that the audience will actually get a full story. It's awful when a show you're into gets cancelled on a cliffhanger because the producers were counting on getting another season. Making the anthology or limited series format the norm would be nice because networks would commit to telling a full (albeit shorter) story.

I read the comics when they were still fresh before the show. It had its moments.

But holy shit the show is trash. Itโ€™s practically a web teen drama with how much drama bullshit they forced in.

I barely watched it after season 2, but there were a few good one off episodes. One where they Stumble upon a town with heads on spikes and thereโ€™s a crazy guy. The episode was self contained, one off and well done. Why the fuck canโ€™t we just have a zombie show with one off monster of the week adventures in the world? Is that so fucking hard? Instead we get โ€˜the ocโ€™ zombie edition.

Coming from a fresh rewatch of BrBa I'd say Justified is honestly better. Breaking Bad has funny moments and big drama moments but they only hit hard once for me. When I rewatched it after 10 years I just didn't really get it the second time, so many characters act fucking retarded for no reason other than to further the plot. Then there's just the utter lack of suspension of disbelief, any gringo trying to sell crystal on cartel territory would be fucking skinned alive or end up like Tortuga.

It is not bad. I don't have a tolerance for forced diversity. But, at certain places and times only black people make sense and that is ok. The only thing so far, and it is not bad enough for me to stop watching, is that the strong, black, woman don't need no man to get shit done and keeps outwitting her white make coworkers that are trying to undermine her. There is also a viva la raza female trucker unionization subplot. You can fast forward through that shit if you like, it makes no difference. Overall pretty good, I have watch every episode so far.

Banshee is fantastic as a binge watch. Importantly, it does not fall to shit in the later seasons like almost every other show on this post and it has a decent ending. It also showcases some of the 10/10 pre-metoo tits and ass in all of hollywood. Plenty of ass-kicking, hot chicks, interesting characters and plots. Out of the entire series, I think maybe the motorcycle gang episode was weak, because of the faggiest fag that ever fagged being the "leader". Other than that I don't even mind the tranny or the one-man-army women. It is worth it!
