The mum having brain cancer is a parallel to the zombies. It's implied with the birth scene that there's still some human in there, same way that the mum is confused but there's still some of her in there. They picked a mum character to deliver that message because people tend to care about mums. The whole message of the movie is "remember death" and "remember love". This film doesn't follow the same style and flow of the two previous. If you watched this almost as its own film, it's a lot better. That's the problem with sequels, it sets the standard for how others should be.
I was initially put off by the style of music used because I was expecting a horror movie and thought, 'this type of song has no place in a horror film'.

I think Boyle wanted to make a coming of age film and thought it would be easier adapting it to the '28' universe, rather than having to write a new world that is difficult for the character. The fact he is waiting to see how this and The Bone Temple will do before making the third, shows you he knows there will be backlash to the film.
