>>211958726 (OP)They should have stuck to the initial plan and done all filming back to back.
Dead Reckoning wasn't perfect but it was a solid enough flick. In Final Reckoning, pretty much all the best stuff is clearly from the initial draft of the movie. But you can 100% tell where the extra production time went, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Desperate attempts to link up every previous entry, accompanied usually by unnecessary flashback footage to earlier films. The most notorious example is how they try to hamfist in the Rabbit's Foot from MI3.
The end result is a pretty flawed, hyper exposition-heavy mess with a few admittedly impressive sequences albeit at the expense of the director suddenly getting a bit too "artsy" (where he hasn't been for the last 3 films he directed) that can't quite stand on its own but as a final entry manages to give the crew a good enough send-off. Don't make another one.
tl;dr it's not "bad". There are no "bad" MI movies, but it's also not good enough to justify a random watch on its own. The only reason you would ever watch it is if you're going through all of them, and in that respect it's "good enough"
>>211958726 (OP)Incredibly shit. Can't believe I sat out the full 3 hours
>>211958936Yeah, the second half of the film is significantly stronger than the first half, which is way way waaaaay too bogged down by tell-don't-show storytelling.
It's also a tiny bit woke? Not enough to ruin it, but I agree they should stop after this one.

>>211958936I like your tier list. Although to me Fallout didn't really stand above Ghost Protocol or Rogue Nation.
>>211959005They tried way too hard to make it all connect since this is supposed to be the final one which actually ended up feeling detrimental. And did it just feel like that to me or was Ethan much more on his own compared to previous movie? All of them have these disparate action scenes where they're not directly in contact with each other but they rely on each other to get the job done at the exact right second. But here it somehow felt a lot more disconnected than in the previous ones. Except for maybe the finale.
>>211959235>Although to me Fallout didn't really stand above Ghost Protocol or Rogue Nation. That's fine. Those are the 3 best in any order.
>>211958726 (OP)end the previous film after Ilsa dies, which is 1:40 minutes in btw.
Start this one with the train sequence, then have him go to the Sevestipol, then the final plane sequence.
Both of these films are way too long.
>>211958726 (OP)Both movies should have been cut down into one. Cut all the bullshit flashbacks and CONSTANTLY recapping shit that just happened, and it could easily be done.
Submarine sequence is fucking S tier though.
Movie doesn't understand how AI or internet works or how Nuclear weapons systems work (they are kept completely off grid, China doesn't even have constructed Nuclear weapons).
The idea that Grace was a poor orphan runaway who grew up on the streets was so fucking ridiculous. If that was true, she would look and sound like this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGYkNLOCbt0
Instead they got the most chelsea/cheltenham actress they could, I don't even need to look up that actresses Wikipedia to know she grew up somewhere around Chelsea and went to Cheltenham.
Ending had the rest of the crew do nothing.
No spycraft in the movie, like only use of masks for like 3 seconds.
I've only ever seen Fallout and I have no desire to see any of the other films.
It was okay I guess. Fallout is the peak of post-Ghost Protocol.
>>211958726 (OP)Tom Cruise ain't finished in Hollywood but he needs to move on from the MI stuff and move back into experimental film.

>Submarine sequence is fucking S tier though. Yeah that was unbelievably kino.
>Movie doesn't understand how AI or internet works or how Nuclear weapons systems work (they are kept completely off grid, China doesn't even have constructed Nuclear weapons).I don't think this matters that much for the plot to work but I get what you're saying. There are plenty of other bullshit tropes in the series tho.
I don't mind Grace as much as you do and I think that sequence where she's comforting him as he schizo's out after having hypothermia is sweet, although I guess you could argue that's still part of the sub sequence. I agree with you she's a bit of a forced character.
The constant explaining and recapping of old movies in the first hour was literally painful to watch.
40% of this film could have been cut
20% of the previous film could have also been cut
Not sure if together that gets it to under 3 hours.
What a fucking dumb villain holy shit
>>211961212I can't decide which movie he annoys me lore in.
In 7 he's the tired old "It was Me Ethan, all along, it was always me" bullshit that is always cringe as fuck in every franchise that pulls it and then on top of that they artificially make him OOC Uber powerful out of nowhere just to have forced tension. Lane was better because they actually built him up over 2 movies.
But then in 8 all that backstreet shit gets completely hand waved off and never extrapolated on and he's just le ebin schizo mastermind who wants to rule the world himself and then they give him what I assume is supposed to be a gag death?
Like seriously what the fuck?
>>211958726 (OP)The good
>the underwater sub and final airplane fight...seriously, what more could they possibly have added to make those scenes better>the movie tied up very nicely the entire series with revealing what the rabbit's foot was to ending the movie in the same place it began>very interesting decision to give Ethan the Entity at the end. He was so adamant that no one person should ever have that power, and yet, they gave it to him and he kept it. Totally expected him to immediately crush it>killing Luther. It was a bold move as he's a fun character>the stakes. Couldn't have been higher and the pressure more intenseThe bad
>the constant flashbacks and exposition. I KNEW this was going to be a massive problem as they waited far too long from the last movie...but let's be honest, if they didn't, the audience would've been absolutely lost. I have no answers on what would've been better. Too much in one place and it sucks hard. Too little throughout the movie, you keep forgetting the plan and the stakes>they have two members on the team and I know next to nothing about and who they are as characters (black guy and that assassin French chick)>speaking of, REALLY wanted more of Paris. But she's just kinda there the whole movie looking good and being bad ass. But no real character to speak of. And they had two movies to make it happen

None of them are bad, but 1, 2, and 8 are all in the lowest tier for completely different reasons.

I wish it was better, but it lands the ending well enough which is kind of all it needed to do.
Kind of reminds me of Halo 3 in that way.
>>211962091And just like Halo 3, they should just stop now

It took them 8 entries but they finally came out with one that was super pozzed.

Let this be the end. Because any further film will absolutely be worse.
>>211958936>Dead Reckoning wasn't perfect but it was a solid enough flickWrong, it sucked.

>>211963877Morocco and Train scenes were way too long and drawn out, the film itself also introduced way too many characters for no reason, then there's the random nemesis out of nowhere, the shitty AI plot, and the completely irrelevant cliff stunt.
>>211958726 (OP)It was OK. It's a strange experience watching a movie where you know at least an hour needed to be cut. The sequence on the sub was great, as well as the final bit with the two biplanes.
I have no idea how to feel about it because I actually think most of it was kind of bad, if not outright shit.
But that Submarine Ghost Ship dive was probably one of the most kino experiences I've sat through in a theater in literally years. I was in a theater with some annoying kids who clearly had never seen an MI movie before and even they were silent throughout it.
Huge props to Cruise and the production staff for that part alone.
>>211964416the weird thing about the nemesis shit is it doesn't even have to be there
You can cut it completely out and lose nothing
It's especially weird that they drop that part completely in 8 anyway.
I thought it was alright but trying to force in a random plot point from III was retarded and completely unnecessary.
I get it's the last one (maybe) and they're making this for the fans, but this is just dumb writing.
Everything up to the title card is complete slop.
I was actually in awe about how poorly paced, written, and exposรฉ dumped it was.
The film also has a fuck ton of dead time. Why is so much time wasted on this American sub with this crew nobody gives a fuck about? Why do we need to keep cutting back to the CIA every time a country has its nukes taken offline?
The Submarine recon is great, yes. The Bi-Plane fight is great, yes. And yes, the ending is pretty appropriate and works well as a send-off for this era of the franchise (because let's be honest, there will be more, with or without Cruise) but for all that, it's still a really messy project that clearly had not nearly enough time on the cutting room floor. I hope the community manages to put together a cut of 7 and 8 and cuts out like 50% of the fat.

The first film was never that universally beloved. People forget that the initial mission impossible is actually a followup to the TV series (both of them). When it released, there was a lot of negative attention due to how it treated the initial characters, especially Jim.
It's only more recently that people have tried to flip the script and say that anyone that doesn't consider it a classic is being contrarian. The CIA sequence is truly fantastic. The rest of the movie not so much. It's still a decent flick. There's no bad Misison Impossible Movies.

it literally adds nothing to the plot to say "that stuff in past movies was about this!"
Who cares if Old McGuffin was secretly the McGuffin 2.0 or if it's a new one. No different. Who cares
It adds nothing and wastes my time and then reminds me that they DIDN'T Plan all of this and now I'm thinking about all of this bullshit when you could have just not done this and done something interesting

I actually don't hate any of the first 7 movies.
I have some serious problems with 2 and 7, but I don't hate them.
That being said, the first act of 8 is by leaps and bounds the worst act in any of the movies by far. It was actually really really bad, like 1/10 bad. The only good thing I can say about it is that for the first time in like 4 movies the opening title cards don't have massive spoilers in them, but that's such a reach to say something nice.
Then the second act is slow as fuck for no reason. Who the fuck is this butch lesbian woman on the sub? I kept waiting for her to do something because they kept shoving her in and I was waiting for her to do somwthing. She killed that one guy and that was it? OK. And yeah I'm sorry but you guys are WAY overrating the Sevestapol sequence. I wasn't falling asleep but the music did the heavy lifting, not the story.
And yeah the 3rd act is just alright.
It's so weird to me how despite all exposition crammed into the movie, it still feels like stuff got cut down? Did anyone else feel like they were hinting at more with the doomsday cultists and that barely went anywhere?
Why these movies were not one movie is beyond me. Don't just say Money.
>>211971708Anon, you have no idea how much it annoys me that there are people actually excited that the rabbits foot became the entity.

They should have just made Fallout a two parter and kept Lane as the final big bad. Fallout did a better job of addressing the whole "you can't save everyone forever, Ethan" plot line, and it did it with a more intimidating villain and tighter story. Part 2 would have Lane going fully insane after being stopped once again and dedicating himself to killing Ethan's friends. Luther and (maybe) Ilsa die, Benji is wounded, final showdown is just 1v1 Ethan and Lane. They would have been able to actually wrap up the Apostles as a story and have a better finale with Lane where they actually kill him. It takes 5 minutes to write a better ending than what we got.

the whole ai storyline and having to get all the macgufffins to stop it is retarded. the problem with smart ai shit in a movie like this is that they have to dumb it down to an understandable level which ends up being mind numbingly nonsensical. the plane scene should have been a fantastic capstone but it was ruined for me because i couldn't get behind that everything is happening because they are going to trap the entity in a flash drive and someone needs to pull it out at a right time
for movies like these, you really need an understandable human villain to bring people along for the ride. gabriel doesn't count because he's not a character and exists to read expository dialogue from the script.
it's ultimately just an awful, awful viewing experience because it's the highest of stakes on top of the most stupidest of frameworks
>>211958726 (OP)Sucking on Pom's delicious toes
>>211958726 (OP)I liked the first mission impossible movie and the rest of the franchise has just bored the shit out of me.
>>211973167In fairness, it never made sense to me that another key couldn't be made
>>211973597Pom underboob was the best part of Final Reckoning
>>211973651>he didnt like John Woo KinoWhite Doves will not fly at your funeral
>>211973734Holy shit
Ok this movie gets another point from me now.
It's now officially not my least favorite in the series anymore.
>>211973287I guess so if we're to believe that they couldn't figure out the opposite coordinates thing that any normal person would figure out in about 10 seconds
>>211973739I love Woo's hk films, but his hollywood movies all fell really flat. Face off is mostly saved by nic cage and dominique swains ass.
I like how it was implied in Dead Reckoning that the entity already had the capability to wreck havoc but didn't because it wanted to basically reshape world order.
But suddenly in this movie it's now the same generic doomsday AI that we have seen in literally every sci-fi movie featuring AI ever.
>>211972022They could kind of still do this.
Lane is still alive, and for all we know the Apostles are still out there.
it's funny
2 movies and we still know NOTHING about Gabriel
muh list
muh negriss
muh wife
muh ruskie
muh boogyman
muh wife (again)
muh past
muh entity
>>211958726 (OP)I watched it.
Didn't really like it, but by the time I went to bed I had kind of come to peace with it. But now a day later I'm souring on it more.
There are some good moments in the film, but like... what the fuck happened with the editing and writing?
What are these fucking flashbacks?
Why is Mission Impossible 3 being hamfisted into the plot 2 hours into the movie?
Why is Gabriel suddenly playing a completely different character?
Why is Tom Cruise busting his ass to stay in shape for these stunts but they can't convince Atwell to shed a few pounds just for appearance sake?
Why is the president a fucking lesbian and why is it important that we know that lmao?
Please let this be the end. Maybe fans can cobble together a better stripped down 3-hour cut of both films messed together that flows better, because between the two of them there is some neat shit in there.
idk man. I guess I should have known it would eventually get fucked. 8 movies in 29 years is a long time. It was bound to get rough.
>>211976858Gabriel being more archaic and representing his own faction I can understand given his failure in the last film.
What I don't get is how we still have no idea who the fuck he is, how he's as elite at everything he is, what his connection to Ethan really is, and even what his plan is.
>>211977417They basically turned him into the illusive man from Mass Effect 3
