I watched this show, and I liked it, very well written and it definitely stands above anime as a work of art.
My main problem that I never understood was how it criticizes Shinji for seeking external validation from the adult figures in his life. Like 14 year old kids should not be chastised for enjoying the approval/praise of a maternal or paternal figure. But this is the central conceit of the show. Shinji wants external validation but he needs internal validation. Maybe this is a weird Jap thing I can't understand but it always bothered me. Its especially bizarre to me because a lot of the problems Shinji & Asuka experience are simply due to them being 14 years old. Especially Asuka.

Absolutely every adult in the show is fucked up. Gendo is fucked up, Misato is fucked up, Akagi is fucked up, Fuyutsuki is fucked up, Kaji is fucked up. It's natural for Shinji, a 14 year old boy, to seek validation from the adults around him, but when all of them range from womanchildren to nihilistic madmen it becomes more important for him to be able to live without depending on the validation of such people.

To be fair, SEELE was doing their best to escape the cycle of death and rebirth and they achieved it in the original TV ending. End of Eva is the neutral ending where the angels reset the world again with Shinji and Asuka as Adam and Eve. The rebuild is the bad ending where it's basically just life as we know it.
