In this film, the wolves appear thematically as antagonists against humans who destroy nature.
And while there used to be wolves in Japan, they are now extinct and do not exist anymore.

Miyazaki is a rabid environmentalist, but that is what makes his films great. He glorifies the natural world and makes nature just another character in the film.

Plus his spergouts about technology are always great, especially that he is an old man.
