What films aren't is being philosophical as in actually being able to form new philosophical concepts and systems, this requires a lot of text and specifically literary engagement. Films can only reference philosophical concepts. But philosophy is not the only intellectual activity. An intellectual movie would be the film in which you yourself need to engage with actively to fully find enjoyment in. Be it a movie that is all about translating very specific emotions through images where you need to tune yourself into a specific mindset, or be it films which are dialogue oriented and require you to actually listen to what is being said. Or both at once.
Saying that, Lighthouse is not especially intellectual. It's a straightforward downward spiral into insanity movie with a very in-your-face aesthetic. Not much tuning in has to be done. It really is just a mainstream movie in terms of pacing and base techniques to engage the viewer except it's stripped of "plot". Which is for the better as it would only distract from everything else and just make the film a slog. The film isn't bad, it's good for what it is, but yes - not intellectual. Eggers does seem like someone who wishes he could make something actually challenging like Alexei German Sr. movies or Bela Tarr. But being American he is too afraid of what normalfags would think.
