Zacky-boy was just more driven than his peers. You can tell he has a thing about self-improvement. Plus, he's got funny little principles and sensibilities when it comes to his craft. You can see his influences, and thy're niche but still kind of a wide range: some Dan Ackroyd and other comedians, David Lynch and Eraserhead, the weird timing of experimental 90s comedy, and the strange quasi-conversational slapstick playing on expectations ala classic Looney Tunes... Add that with Cusack's own maverick anarchy and a shared affinity for dumbed-down archetypes with Zach, and the two were bound to be successful. They're silly boys.

To be honest, I've always found Oney Plays funnier than Smiling Friends. When I watch Smiling Friends, I recognize the effort that went into it and I think the style is pretty nice, and sometimes it makes me smile, but it's Oney Plays that makes me laugh. I think Zach's comedy just works better when you're given a verbal description of a situation and your own imagination creates the rest, like on Oney Plays.
