there are a lot of nods to breaking bad and characters from breaking bad, but most of the focus is on the original characters and story. but as the seasons go on, breaking bad sort of becomes more relevant gradually

Honest answer to your question -- at least from my perspective, the nods to Breaking Bad were never as hamfisted as in that first episode. I've grown to love what the first episode (and where it goes from there) does, but the first time watching it I felt a little like you. But if your fear is that BCS is just going to be trying to ride the coattails of BB, it definitely does a lot more than that, and develops its own identity. By the last few episodes of Season 1, you'll see that.

I think Kim was the best part, hate it when it becomes a Breaking Bad lite during the later seasons, the flashbacks are distracting since the actors are all so old. The ending was BS, it made the brother be right about everything despite him being some autistic asshole that deserved to die. The real Jimmy would've shortened his prison sentence.

-It made absolutely zero sense in the context of the story. It only makes sense as a wink wink fan service nod to Breaking Bad fans.
-The writing in general was also terrible - the spent about 15 mins setting up the fact that he was broke and struggling at the beginning, which could have been done in 2 mins. But apparently they thought i was stupid and so they just kept hitting me over the head repeatedly.
-The monologue he gives to the kids about how he was once really amazing was pathetic.
-The music was really bad.

BB/BCS have really poor worldbuilding. If it doesn't move the plot it doesn't exist. Think of all the scenes in the Sopranos where Tony is just watching TV, or in the Wire where the characters are at the bar. There's almost nothing like that in BB/BCS, children included of course.

Possible le reddit take here. But I think that Better Call Saul is one of the greatest series ever made. I've watched it 3 times all the way through. It also seems like one of those shows you can truly recommend to anyone. I will admit though, there's some pretty bad fan service nods to Breaking Bad. But it is overall kino.

Breaking Bad is a great show too; comparing the shows is simply apples to oranges. Why can't we just appreciate Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould for creating shows about meth dealers and sleezy criminal lawyers that general audiences can connect with?

One of the biggest plotlines that made Jimmy and Kim break up is unintentionally getting Howard killed by having him stop at their apartment and having Lalo show up at the same time to kill him. Without the cartel stuff Howard doesn't die and Jimmy and Kim stay together after tarnishing his reputation, and Jimmy never fully sinks into the mask of Saul Goodman.
