Because just like the 90s, its lame and trying too hard to be cool.

There are other late 90s movies that don't have that retrofuturistic aesthetic

And succeeding. Something that has become impossible in the new millennium.
Zoomers will never make cool cinema. They don't know what cool is.

Most of the outdoor scenes were filmed in Sydney which gives it a contemporary urban look but there is an uncanny quality due to the differences in architecture and urban planning compared to American cities.

It was called the Y2K aesthetic and was associated with the new millennium. It became popular in 1998-2001.

You associate the Matrix with the late 1990s as the Neo style sunglasses and all that aesthetic became very trendy precisely BECAUSE of Matrix. The movie itself was a trendsetter for, and defined that aesthetic.

Before 1998-1999, the 1990s was more associated with either grunge (Nirvana), or the so-called Memphis aesthetic of the late 1980s. (Think MC Hammer)

The street scenes in freeze-frame were filmed with huge backlit projections, very bright but not hot. Cutting edge at the time, supplied by the family company of a friend of mine.
He introduced me to the guy who fabricated the cool little slip-top Nokia used by Neo. People swarmed Nokia saying they wanted that phone and Nokia had to make a model to match it.
Guy who came up with it didn't get a cent.

Go on, say something about Jews, blacks or homos you weird little freckle.

I know you're baiting but anyway - you can't rewind time to re-watch the original movie. there's only greened versions and de-greened-greened versions, which are even worse. The trailer has the original look at least: Just straight up the real world, not some Fincher Se7en fantasyland

it didn't capture it it INVENTED it, this film was very unique and it depicted an aesthetic that is now associated with the late 90s because of the matrix

It's from 1999 and was extremely influential. What kind of a stupid fucking question is that?
