i have a theory about what happened and it actually makes perfect sense
garland was sitting there writing the script, about a dad and son embarking on a quest to train the boy and maybe meet a doctor to look at the mom, simple premise.
garland asked his wife to take a look at the script.
his wife walks in, takes a gander at the scripts tells him:
>its an okay script, ally, but ill tell you whats missing. i think they should leave the capable toxic father behind, because his just a cheating asshole like all men, and the son and mother should go out on their own and hmmmm how about his, how about the mom, despite being a crazed cluster B nutjob riddled with brain cancer, about half way through the movie, goes full yas queen to help another female zombie and then a giant jason momoa-looking zombie with a giant dick - which we will show, we will show this giant jason momoa penis a lot - chases her because the giant penised jason momoa zombie might look like an enraged psychopath but actually hes a loving father unlike that PIECE OF SHIT white man back at the house who cheated on me.......i mean her. i mean cheated on the mom. put that in!
and then alex garland proceeded to re-write half the movie
