I remember reading somewhere too that the sequel was supposed to be on the international space station. The film was about witnessing an alien invasion on Earth, but being helplessly stranded on the ISS, forced to watch and come to terms that they might never return home. Apparently that film ended up being split into 10 Cloverfield Lane, Overlord, and The Cloverfield Paradox

People weren't necessarily stuck on the Voltron idea, it was just one of the more popular and entertaining theories. It was announced like half-way in the build-up that the monster would be a unique monster invented by JJ Abrams, so theories quickly started centering around the plot and worldbuilding from the various ARG sites they had up. THOSE were far more interesting and fun than theories about an IP monster, Slusho and Jamie and the deep-sea drilling and all that other shit that went absolutely nowhere.

Plus the whole slusho thing was just a giant confusing clusterfuck that went nowhere, IIRC there was something about it potentially mind-controlling people or fucking with them in other ways. Also back then JJ Abrams had been hyping up this cloverfield thing as an expansive project that'd have follow up projects and all kinds of more shit happening, so that was interesting and worth discussing.
