She was supposed to be the ships doctor. Doctors who have lots of experience tend to be older like Bones was older than captain kirk by at least 10 years. Her character was much better than annoying crusher who should have been left at star fleet headquarters indefinitely after she left the show.

All she did as a doctor was wave her doodad over her patient, and it fixed them automatically.

I liked her but she was basically the old lady version of Bones. I don't necessarily like Crusher more and I think within the show Crusher is a much less capable character, but at least Crusher is different kind of doctor.

The first few episodes with her are awful except the Sherlock Holmes one. Kind of sucks because she was finally finding her stride & place on the show when the season ended.

Crusher sucks, worst romantic interest for a guy who should honestly fuck around more than Kirk actually did.

IIRC the showrunner for season 2 hated Gates McFadden so she got rid of her. They managed to hire Muldaur because she was in the orginal Star Trek. After they bounced the show runner the next season they brought Crushers character back

I never picked up on her character being female Bones until my third viewing of TNG. Then I got it but she just had none of the charm of McCoy so I continued to despise her
