>”I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result. For us, a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded to take place at the same exact site with all the diving that’s going on all around the world, I think it’s just astonishing. It’s really quite surreal.”

With all respect to Cameron here, I have to strongly disagree with his assessment here.

While Captain Smith objectively erred in maintaining full speed at night through an ice field, he was going off a career of 40 years’ worth of experience (during which he had maintained a near-spotless safety record) and honestly it wasn’t *that* deviant and many of his contemporaries (especially at Cunard) regularly did the same thing to maintain schedules. It’s more comparable to the “normalization of deviance” that led to the destruction of the space shuttle Columbia.

Stockton Rush’s conduct on the other hand constituted straight up criminality.

That fucking guy started his career on ships that used sails. The early ships he commanded could barely go much faster than a ship rigged with sails.
