sprinter zombies is the only way the whole world collapses. if they're old romero shamblers, they're not enough of a threat. i think night of the living dead does a great job of explaining this, especially the color remake with tony todd. the only reason almost everyone in that house died is because they stayed in that house.
the us military would clean shamblers up. sprinters would probably overwhelm them though. even with all their toys, a sprinting undead human cannibal that attacks on sight is an asymmetrical threat military is not trained to deal with.
