makes sense, there are only 5 routes for thousands of planets and most of the systems are far away from them

I'm not a loresperg but that's what I always assumed. The established hyperspace lanes are akin to paved maintained highways and deviating from them rapidly increases your risk of warp crashing into a warp tree or warp boulder.

I don't see why not. Cargo ships have limited fuel, and the routes are designed to traverse the most important planets as quickly and efficiently as possible to reach the capital planet on time. These routes also need protection against space pirates, and that requires a specific, planned path.

no, the silk road was a network of people, it wasn't traversed by one person, ever. that would be ludicrous just like travelling across an entire galaxy is ludicrous, even with hyperspace demolishing the speed of light barrier.
indeed, with hyperspace it's more likely most trade would be planet-to-planet and sort of structured like freight shipping is on planet earth. each transit has a cost, the goal is to effectively sort things among couriers so everything getst to its destination as fast as possible. an entire galaxy of hundreds if not thousands or tens of thousands of worlds relying on a handful of trade routes makes no sense. there would be trade EVERYWHERE.
trade is just what happens when two people decide to cooperate on leveraging their comparative advantages.
the silk road was primarily concerned with luxury imports from the east into countries with no production of their own. when the secrets of silk escaped china, the silk trade collapsed. same thing with plaster, another chinese trade secret. they knew when the KNOWLEDGE got out, there monopoly would end.

Only a few, like the Trade Federation, had the money to own huge fleets of cargo ships. The taxes imposed by the Republic were likely intended to combat this monopoly.

yeah that doesn't make any sense. truckers own their rigs, the company owns the lines and puts them on the job but their equipment is their responsibility. no reason to expect a similar system would not hold, in a galaxy where space travel is common and routine, private ownership of craft is already established.
the trade federation just wanted to choke competition. the taxes were a way of doing that. they relied on droid labor to keep costs down; the taxes were ruinous for smaller firms.

And simply put, the Trade Federation was the group of people with the knowledge of the hyperspace routes.
Similar the Venetians, they had the ships, the automatons to load and unload cargo, the had the knowledge of the ports and their trading needs, they had the ports and warehouses. They were the groups of different people that were the trade routes.

Space has little terrain to stop shipping, but that is the least important aspect of it.

The entire prequel series is
>galactic politics
>trade routes/supply lines
>taxes/tarrifs/corruption
>cloning
>propaganda
>jews selling kids into pod-slavery
>human/technology integration (the "next level of evolution")
Overall, the prequels sucked ass, and that shit is for fags

i forgot what the deal was. the republic wanted to tax the trade union? weren't they already doing this? did the republic not have a system of tariffs before this event? and why the fuck are the jedi getting involved in naked political disputes? i thought they were supposed to mediate matters of enormous import, not bean counter squabbles.
