If you rewatch it, the second two acts are a great war time action adventure picture. Incredibly well directed with every single technical department delivering a 10/10. It just has zero ability to get out from under that opening, which was some of the best filmmaking ever done at the time. He would just build out these huge sets, cover every detail in the scene with full make-up and wardrobe and then on the day block it as he felt right. He was also shooting, if not whole films, then scenes chronologically wherver possible. There's tons of stuff going on in the background (or not even on screen) that he didn't feel like focusing on when shooting. Pays to have total financial freedon and control.
