Han solo was born in 29 BBY... Ten years before Luke and Leia were born. The Galactic Republic was, for all intents and purposes, intact... at least superficially... for the first nine or ten years of his life. The republic had at least a modicum of political ties to the Jedi Order, which was obviously centered entirely around the force. While Solo doesn't come off as the kind of guy to be politically minded and plaster the back of the Millennium Falcon with bumper stickers, he had to be familiar enough with the workings of government to know who to avoid and which worlds were safe and so forth. If that same government was tied to the force and there were loads of Jedi Knights still around when he was a kid, how the heck does he not believe it exists?
