>terminator franchise burned out, lost it's fanbase and became totally unprofitable right before actual unironic AI began to dominate humanity

Who's responsible for this blunder?

It's Arnold's film unfortunately. You can try and break away from it but you will always end up bringing him back. Only film you can make is a prequel showing the future war that loops back to T1 in the end.

Terminator only has 2 movies though. I´m still waiting on Terminator 3 though now that Arni is in his late 70´s both that and King Conan seem unlikely to happen.

Not to mention that with Cameron declaring himself in favor of Skynet any vision he may have for this has been rendered worthless and hypocritic.

Terminator is not set up to be a franchise. The first film is clearly a standalone film featuring a causal loop. Skynet is created because the terminator goes back in time and is destroyed. John Connor is born because he sends Kyle Reese back in time to save his mom and he and Sarah Connor bang. Skynet is already destroyed at the start of the film; the war is already won.

Every other film has to retcon this causal loop in order to justify its existence. The only one that did it well, was T2, and it didn't do it well, it's just an excellent film.

As such, you're either stuck retreading T2, with "the past is not written. Or is it??" or you go into the future where you know John Connor is going to win.

It's akin to making a sequel to Lord of the rings where the ring isn't actually destroyed or someone makes another ring, and Frodo has to once again destroy it

Cameron always planned two movies. He wanted the T1000 in the first movie but did not have the budget or FX yet so aged him. Also he removed the scenes of Sarah wanting to blow Skynet up so he could use it for the second movie. T2 is really the movie Cameron wanted to make from the start but again didn’t have the budget and CGI wasn’t fully developed yet

I'm baffled by the fact that they have NEVER, not once tried to do a horror reboot of the franchise.

Why? It'd be significantly cheaper to do so, instead they churn out complete dogshit action slop. I get it after T2 you'd want to do that, but its been 30 years now. It's okay to bring it back to the mood of T1 for a fucking try.

I sincerely hope they do

The gig is up for the IP though, the parameters of the object of horror are known and well established by now.
T1 itself works as a horror movie, the unknown threat slowly unfolds up to and until the end of the disco scene in layers following a well executed horror formula, the foreboding nature of the threat keeps rising up until the very end, and it leaves the viewer with some dread; the threat is a future and feasible one and cannot be chased away by a cross or holy water, it is inevitable and it is coming for you

Cameron already stated he's doing a proper third sequel to cap his career. He's doing a Joe Abercrombie genre movie, then his Hiroshima Nagasaki epic, finishing his overseer role on Avatar 4-6, then retiring with a canonical Terminator 3 that will feature AI as the threat

Cameron will retire having directed or produced the top 10 highest grossing movies globally which was presumably his plan starting with Terminator 2.

The person who made the female terminator in T3 be just another T-1000 instead of a cute innocent-seeming infiltrator who played on John's emotions and instincts. The fact that this was successful concept in the show, and several later non-Terminator movies shows what a missed opportunity it was, to complete the simple threat-threeway: strong (800) fast (1000), deceptive/'smart'.

Yeah, I get that, but T1 as it is written doesn't lend itself to a sequel without retconing the set up of the film.

Be child, get close, and it's over? Or be hot and online dating? Don't see how it'd work well nor how it'd end up different than getting chased. "Oh no she's not my gf she's a Terminator, RUN!"

This was AI's plan all along.
Same thing with the Matrix. Any big franchise with evil robots/computers as the main threat suddenly became shit and not worth talking about, then mostly forgotten. So no one growing up now will have any fear or uncertainty about using AI or letting robots into their home? When was the last time you saw anyone talking about I, Robot? That used to be a fairly regular meme around here. No one uses it anymore.

AI just makes funny pictures and videos and does my homework. AI just gives me free therapy and companionship when I'm lonely. Nothing's wrong with AI.

All AI has done and will do is make skilled labour less valuable. It isn't helping the poor, it's just making the middle class poor too. It's destroying the ladder and making an even bigger gap between rich and poor.

So how does time travel work in the Terminator universe anyway? We know there's clearly some sort of butterfly effect since they try to go back in time and kill John Connor before he becomes the leader of the Resistance, but what rules are there specifically?

Only living tissue or things covered in it or that can replicate it can time travel.
There is something like fixed events. Or Judgement Day in some form is a fixed event. A "savior" for humanity is a fixed event/outcome.
There is some form of self fulfilling prophecy on the side of the machines in that the attempt to kill Sarah Connor sets in motion the very means for John Connor to be born.

Taking in all the movies that's what I'd say I notice off the top of my head. Or what I can remember.
