Now to be fair just about everything revolving around Luke redeeming Vader is fucking peak star wars. Those scenes alone are what elevate Return despite all of its numerous problems.

Are the post OT EU comics good, or am I better off just reading the novels if I'm interested in that era?

Return is the only good film from the original trilogy. The scenes in the throne room are so good they feel like they're from a different series. Jabba's palace is great dark fantasy. Even the space battle hasn't been surpassed to this day, it feels realistic (for what it is).

In terms of "important," it's basically Dark Empire and nothing else. The Marvel stuff was reduced to third tier "S" canon and the early Dark Horse comics mostly went back to the Old Republic before eventually returning to the PT/OT era eith scattered post-OT stories.
