Meh. It was fine. Everyone there just went through the motions. A couple of laughs here, a couple of WOW's there and that's about it. It felt incredibly desperate to me. There were so many beats in the story and moments that practically was hand-holding the audience to a certain emotional reaction. Acting was weak and spotty. CGI was crap. A lot, and I do mean, a LOT of eye-rolling quips you eventually grow numb to. A lot of universe setup that only people with too much time on their hands and not enough sense will care for. Two post-credit scenes that were just unfunny gags. It's like one of those Phase 4-5 Marvel movies in all the worst ways. Not a single inkling of DC in this, it's just a Marvel movie in every respect. But it wasn't offensively bad, just offensively mediocre.

I think it's going to make a shittton of money on the basis of the brand name, the way that it's engineered in every aspect to be a crowd-pleaser and the fact neither of its competitors are getting the same amount of push and marketing. I predict a 800 million haul. James Gunn will have the reins to DC for a very, very long time. Sadly or not.

Both actually. DC always had a style of its own that was very distinct, even when the stories were fantastical and "silly". This is just a Marvel movie. Also, Superman/Clark in this is pretty bad. He acts like Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Uses dude, heck, bro, and other slang terms that, yeah a young guy in the 2020's would use, but that just don't work when the character is supposed to be SUPERMAN. Way too much teen angst and gets way too emotional. Actually starts to cry a bit and goes all like WHY WON'T PEOPLE JUST BE NICE TO EACH OTHER. Way too overdone.

Ultraman and Ultra-Humanite are two characters in DC lore with no connection to each other. For some godforsaken reason, Gunn mixed them together into something that mixes both and resembles neither. Bizarre, bizarre fucking move. Also, Superman kills a bunch of genetically enhanced human soldiers in the final fight. Point blank.

Not sure how to take that since even MCU movies aren't like Marvel comics and never really were. If anything Marvel comics tended to be more down to earth than DC which leaned towards more fantastical, it's bizarre that they got swapped in adaptation.

He's....not good. He doesn't know how to emote. There's scenes where he tries to get emotional but his eyes are completely stone cold. He yells yet his eyes and brows are completely untense. Also, his whole schtick as a goofy nerd Clark gets very tiring very fast. He also doesn't act like Superman at all aside from playing pretend with Lois. He's just the goofy idiot Clark but in a suit and without glasses. Like I said, he's Superman: Tom Holland's Spider-Man edition. If you're a real fan of Superman, this movie will put you through the ringer. Even worse are the media sites who will gaslit you into thinking it's a comic accurate success story.

Yeah but that mostly only really applied to Batman. DC got a bit edgier in the 90s when all comics did but more or less stopped that for a while. Even Batman comics kind of go on and off about being edgy. If anything I think it was Nolan's trilogy that did it. They were a smash hit with the grounded realism thing and then they tried to apply the same to Superman based off a script Goyer wrote.

Man of Steel being dark and gritty is the most infuriating misconception about that whole era of DC. It was operatic, "realistic" and like a science fiction film than a superhero one but it wasn't a dark and gritty film, no way. I still love it to death but don't care about BvS or the Snyderverse movies which are cancer. MoS was good because it was a Nolan Superman movie Snyder just happened to direct. Nolan's touch was all over MoS. Compare MoS to BvS and you pinpoint when Nolan checks out. Ben Affleck's Batman was wrongly placed. The enitre DCEU was a last-minute idea, not an actual long-term plan. It ruined MoS forever.

It's okay, it's the best of Snyder's DCEU films because obviously it wasn't his script and he was just there to hold onto the reigns and it was only later he got more control to go full bore with his autism. Obvious flaws are due to his direction though. He's way too focused on what looks cool at the expense of everything else. Like yeah Superman throwing Zod through Smallville and causing a massive explosion looks awesome but it also makes it come off like Superman doesn't give a shit about anyone around him. Nolan is generally more restrained.

Hmpf. This worries me. Ultra-Humanite started as just another genius bald criminal (actually predating Luthor), and was later turned into an ape with a big brain. He never had kryptonian-like powers. If this is an attempt to subvert expectations, and not do a Bizarro, it just sucks.

Eh they can always just use Ultraman whenever since he's from an alternate reality anyway. They could literally just call him Superman and have him act like Ultraman. Not that they should, "evil alternate Superman" is boring as shit and played out a million times by now. The MCU has basically done it twice already, The Boys has done it, Injustice has done it, the DCAU did it, Invincible did it, James Gunn has literally already done it with Brightburn. Superman 3 did it and Superman 4 more or less too. I'd be happy if we never see Ultraman. Bizarro maybe because at least he has his opposite day gimmick.

Nope. This is either hitting 1 billion or fizzling at 600 million, no middle ground. It could go either way. It was looking optimistic last week because curiosity was starting to pull, but it's fizzling again. I think the Israel Iran stuff has stressed out people and Superman portends too much global destruction and stakes. I predict 650 million and Gunn stays on for three years but never gets a Batman off the ground regardless of whether Reeves does his sequel.

This is the billion dollar gambit that needs to light the world on fire. If it doesn't do a billion and more, it's nothing short of a cataclysmic failure especially given what's on the line.

That's what composers are for dummy. Tons of directors work with people to generate original scores that fit their iterations. Hell even Reeves was able to do that for the Batman. But then again considering Gunn chose the DP from The Flash to shoot this film, which according to him had a bad shot make it into promotional material. I can understand why he would rather latch onto others work.

MCU started pretty down to earth with iron man and incredible hulk, they just had to keep escalating building up to Avengers.

On the other hand, Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy was so successful and Green Lantern flopped so WB thought "gritty + realistic" was the way to go, even if it only really works for Batman.

what the actual fuck is so hard about “the middle act dragged/rushed because of pacing in this one scene which was meant to transpose the next but was lost in context.” you know what people didn’t like about mos? The non-linear narrative, the loud third act, and Superman committing murder. these are SPECIFIC. is Gunn’s narrative functional? are there any outright abhorrent characterizations? no? just vague generalities that sound like a teenage girl talking about the movie she watched on netflix?

What's hard is he didn't actually see the movie and creating a detailed scene off the top of your head that aligns with is difficult for brainlets and it's easier to just base your review off already existing marketing/leaks. Now he has to cope and claim he forgot a movie that he saw literally yesterday, because that's when the press screening was. He would've been better off just asking A.I to make a scene for him.
