As opposed to letting cancer killing her in pain that she was already in? It was mercy euthanasia. He was only right in that he couldn't really help him, but Kelson at least had the balls to end her with boots on with mind still intact somewhat.

As someone whose mother died from breast cancer with lymph nodes and liver filled with cancer, what Kelson did wasn't a mad act at all. I already said it, don't make me repeat it, it was mercy euthanasia, you don't want any living being suffer in pain. We ended our dog's life after she was 13yo rottie diagnosed with cancer that was pretty much untreatable, you don't force them to live just because of your selfish needs. The whole thing about memento mori and memento amoris flew all over your head it seems.

Sure Kelson was weird as fuck but nothing he did was really mad or negative. Jamie if he had balls would've confronted his son about the cancer as well his wife that it was time to let go. None of the subsequent actions would've happened with him leaving either. I agree it was too aggressive of a decision but kids aren't exactly levelheaded rational at that age. The community knows what cancer is, surely Isla wasn't the first one to die from cancer in 30 years given she knew she had it, everyone would've understand, they could've even held some burning ritual and proper funeral as the whole island, that's what tight knit communities were and are like.
I'm just not sure how they could provide painless euthanasia to her since meds seemed to be nonexistent as well firearms. Maybe they had some firearms with reserve bullets for rainy day but otherwise they use bows.

The movie establishes Jamie as an alpha male of his community and as such, his son has a lot to live up to which is why he takes him out to the mainland younger than usual. He slaps him but it's clear that's the first time he's ever done that which shows he's a very lenient father otherwise. I just think he was portrayed very unfairly just to get him off the movie.
