Might be a controversial opinion but does anyone else think the X-Men movies are better than anything in the MCU?

That's because it feels more like a timecapsule of early 2000's kino instead of capeshit.

I mean... yeah, they probably are, but it says more about how SHIT most of the MCU is. The only movie that comes close to me is probably Guardians of the Galaxy...

X2 is certainly better than most of the Marvel movies. It has Wolverine straight up stabbing mercenaries in the chest. Incredible cast too. No wonder theyโ€™re still doing it decades later.

The fans want to see the stuff from comics adapted onto screen in a visual form, not just in plot and theme. The entire reason why Deadpool 3 did well is because Wolverine wore the costume and people who grew up wanting that from these movies finally got to see it. Hugh Jackman said behind the scenes it felt amazing and they were wrong for theorizing for years it wouldnt work, everyone loved it, the scenes with him in it break the fourth wall by playing psuedo-gospel music. Yes capeshit is stupid, yes the fans are stupid, we want to be superficially pleased, these movies do not represent that. And 3 sucks even tho its about average quality in terms of modern mcu stuff it ruined the entire team and after that its just wolverine movies. Again where he doesnt wear his costume. No costumes means no fun comic lore or superhero persona just realistic drama, so an element was missing. And until recently people who agreed with me were labeled as retarded basically but now we have proof it works and looks good and is preferable. Xmen Apocalypse was a step in the right direction but still mostly shit and rightfully sunk the company. Apocalypse should be a giant hulk sized video game boss they again tried to tone it down.

Easily anything recently. It's been awhile But like early phase 1 stuff was pretty solid. X2 still pretty good. Their are some good moments but none of the Days of Future Past or First Class or Apocalypse or Pheonix Saga? were that great to me.

Everyone with significant screentime gets to do at least one cool thing. Nightcrawler in the White House, Wolverine at the Mansion, Storm in the air with the tornados, Jean going Phoenix Mode more than once, Rogue saving those agents by sapping Pyro's powers, Pyro showing what he can do, it goes on and on. Mystique in particular gets to do a ton of cool shit, and it's amazing to me how Rebecca Rominjin, who's primarily a model, manages to make the character more interesting and impressive than fucking JLaw ever did.

Also, McKellen is in his prime in this movie. We talk about Jackman as Wolvering but McKellen as Magneto is another 10/10 casting. Him slowly corrupting Pyro is kino, as is him almost winning at the last minute.

The core dynamic of Professor X and Magneto throughout the movies is more interesting than pretty much anything in the MCU. Even in the shitty movies it's compelling due to the great actors chosen and the fact the characters are so good and play off each other so well.

It strikes me how seriously these movies (at least the first 3) took themselves.
You couldn't do a trailer like this without pausing for quips or ironic dialogue somewhere. It's melodramatic but I respect it

>Where McKellan and Stewart just screwing around and having fun?
Probably. English actors generally don't have the same self serious attitude American ones do when it comes to roles. Look at the filmography of Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Tim Curry, etc. Majority of it is shit, but they're great actors. If the money's good they'll take it. McKellan and Stewart are no different.
>I still don't understand why they cast thespian actors that were way overqualified for those movies.
Cause it works. Having some grade A actors in genre movies adds a lot. None of the MCU villains can top McKellan's Magneto, Dafoe's Goblin, Molina's Doc Ock; shit even Brian Cox as Stryker, a guy with zero powers, absolutely mogs he generic CG capeshit villains of today.

I saw X-Men 2 theatrically at the tender age of 11 and that was the first time I had to process the emotions a film put me through. It had adventure, it was sexy, the ending was bittersweet, there were much deeper meanings if you're looking for them. Those first two films stand far above most capeshit even from the period, with the exception of maybe Blade, Blade 2, and the first Raimi Spider-Man (2 was overly saccharine and 3 is...unique). I started reading the X-Men comics around the same time, which was when famed writer Chris Claremont returned. Plus both cartoons ('92 and Evolution) at the time were being rerun on Saturday mornings. Good times.

Romijn's Mystique is still the GOAT. Also, I you watch McKellen in another Bryan Singer film, Apt Pupil, I think you'll see why he was chosen to play Mags.

>>212048107

Apparently neither McKellen nor Stewart knew how to play chess and had to learn for those big scenes in the first two movies.

Not really, no
X-Men movies were what originally started most of the capeslop of 'just take the basic characters names, maybe their powers, call it a day'
Jackman being Wolverine was retarded, Berry playing Storm was retarded, Rogue was retarded, Nightcrawler not being even slightly religious was retarded, the entire thing was fucking fundementally unholy shit and is one of the main reasons MCU is 'funny haha first then the story'

The first 2? Sure. 3? not really. First generation and days of the future past? Kind of even with the best phase1 MCU stuff, which is not saying much. Age of Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix? Those are just X-men 3 all over again.

The wolverine. KEK no. Logan? Logan was kino and very different to the rest of the movies on this list.
