The new companion cringe is a bit overstated and having a wild mage outside of CHARNAME is a fun addition mechanically even if her OH SO QUIRKY plotlines get annoying. (also her dogshit stats SLIGHTLY balance out how broken wild magic is)

No, you do not need any mods that affect content. I don't remember new editions having major QoL issues either. As expansive as BG3 is, BG2 will forever be my favorite Baldur's Gate game—better storytelling, better humor, actually fun high level play.
