How the fuck did Hirohito get away with WW2 war crimes? Was he really a Japanese military’s puppet with no executive powers?
>Be Emperor Hirohito
>Has supreme executive powers,( just like Kim Jong Un), over PM Hideki Tojo and his 5 star generals to Order the bombing of Pearl Harbor and surrender to the Americans.(Remember the coup leaders were executed via Seppuku for defying the emperor’s orders)
>Hosted the 1964 & 1972 Olympics
>Visited Disneyland in 1975.
>Dies at the ripe old age of 90 on 1990

USA was worried if they put him to trial and hung him that the Japanese people would either go back to suicide bombing everyone or go to the communist (also suicide bombing as communist) so they used him as a puppet to bring the Japanese people closer to the west. Basically the US was tired of dealing with the crazy mfers and just figured this would be easier.
The excuse to why he wasn’t executed was that his “supreme executive power” was for emergency use only and when he first used it during the sino/Japanese wars it created more issues so he tried to be hands off and let the government run itself. Of course it’s a dumb excuse because the shit that was going on was an emergency and he could have surrendered at anytime.

Would it have really mattered whether he had committed any war crimes or not? The government pardoned many of them anyway.

Because the crimes didn't happen. No matter how much you cry, Nanking was just civil unrest suppression.

The Allies didn't care if Japan stayed fascist (after the war, Japan has been a de facto one party state run by the same military leaders of WW2), they just didn't want Japan to have an empire that interfered with British and American interests. When the empire was dismantled, MacArthur couldn't care less if they still kept Hirohito and gave most of the military leadership a slap on the wrist.

The US believed that executing Hirohito would be a total insult to the collective Japabese soul which would make occupation and rapprochement much harder. The Japanese high command agreed with this sentiment, and Tojo personally took the blame for many things which were actually the Emperor's fault to preserve his honor.

It's hard to say what would have truly happened. There was at least one high profile Japanese air ace who would speak about Hirohito with total contempt and call him a coward and hypocrite (which he was).

Westerners have always been fascinated with Japan, because when Westerners travelled and conquered around the world, all they encountered were primitive peoples doing human sacrifice, living in mud huts, or at best living in feudal societies with no electricity or drinking water.

But the Japs managed to industrialize on their own, while remaining wholly alien and nonwestern.

So it was kinda fascinating. Imagine if today we explored the Galaxy and only found primitive ayyys on every planet but suddenly we came across an ayyyy civ at a tech level equal to our own. We would be mesmerized by it.

Thus weeaboos were born.
