I think Sid's "surgery" on his toys hints at an intelligent and creative side which he has no productive or meaningful outlet for. His hostility and other anti social (or pre anti social) behaviors may have many causes but we just don't know enough about his life or history to know for sure. I would speculate that he has no father or a step father he doesn't get along with. I think at the very least he is neglected and so acting out against his sister (whom he might perviece is favored by his parents) and Andy and probably others. Obviously none of this is the intent behind the movie though.
