it seems like this was what they were going for in the original script, but they made him meeker and the alien the villain in the released movie. In the original teaser Elio comes off as a shy person, in the actual movie he is like a genuine chris chan certified fag

Make no mistake, the original movie was going to be about the main character accepting his homosexuality using an "accepting yourself" allegory. The original director is gay and the leaked storyboard for the old movie had Elio embracing his clone while crying as a whole allegory of accepting yourself.

The movie would have been controversial and probably flopped hard too (I'm looking at you, Strange World) but at least it had a message to it unlike the one they ended up making after the directors were replaced.

The bootcamp played a much bigger role and all the concept art for Elio had him pose and dressed super flamboyantly.
Some of the artists involved were planning to make this super camp.
