It was pure marketing gimmick. He didn't do anything that actually mattered. He just took a bunch of old stage tricks that hadn't been in use for decades and made them interesting again. He also got people interested in stage magic at a time when public interest was at an all time low.

David Copperfield is actually a set of twins, and for a lot of tv magic, absolutly everyone is in on it and the trick is on the viewers at home. There you go... magic is ruined.

betray is a strong word. some magicians might have been bummed out how he made a quick buck, but there was a reason no one was using those illusions any longer. a lot of them already known about, and the others lost their allure

Original version shown as a four episode with two tricks per episode (except the last one) on ITV during the October build had it as a woman who was known in the UK magic scene

The American version (after the ITV version was done) was blocked by a shitload of magicians there and Valentino threatened to sue along with the rest of them unless one of them (him) got to do the entire show and oversee it and then decided to reveal himself
He never got any fucking backlash outside of it from the UK scene who didn't like him revamping the entire show into a one hour special

The original series has the fuck history of shit and more info on different variations of tricks. The US show was just 'ooh magic, ok next ooh magic' and killed the entire premise

I don't think it should be this easy to shut down the discussion on what constitutes magic. I do respect the fact that, with art, and conjuring is a form of performance art, there is no authority on what art is, and what should be accepted. But I do think people are allowed to make their own common sense judgments on what is a legitimate expression of the art form and what isn't.

I'm not impressed by or interested in a magic trick that consists of actors, TV special effects and bold-faced lying. Any nigger can do that, I could do it, and in my opinion that is not real illusionism. I'm more entertained by an illusion I can't perform, because I lack the knowledge, skill, charisma and ingenuity to pull it off. People are entitled to their opinion that because magic is based on deception, that somehow makes Piss Angel and his ilk as valid as any other magician. But I do not agree. The best magicians can perform spectacular illusions without ever lying to their audience.

for me it was the trick where he made a jeep appear and the whole trick was just that the jeep was out of view of the camera the whole time it drove up
