Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is great. I watched it back in 2009 on Animax. I rewatched Paranoia Agent recently because I remember seeing it on cartoon network as a kid and it left an impression but it was mostly really mediocre except for two or three stand-out episodes with Happy Family Planning far and away being the absolute best.

As I get older I crave increasingly more depressing trauma porn from my media and with isekai being the most popular anime genre currently and slice of life being dominant before that I've been avoiding anime for decades.

I've asked for recommendations multiple times in multiple places and repeatedly just get trash and slop recommended to me, or sometimes even tasteless artless edgelord shit that feels like the era of family guy where stewie was vivisecting people.

I want a fucking anime that makes me feel the way I felt when I watched The Shining as a kid, or lodges itself in my brain the way Midsommar did. I just don't think it's the medium for those kinds of experiences.

Steins;Gate is not about time travel.
It's about C-PTSD.

The VN hits this home a lot harder, and especially all the branching plots and their respective endings paint a picture of very raw trauma, giving you an intimate understanding of why they are the way they are and actually peeling back the layers of these seemingly shallow chuunibyou permanent middle schooler characters.

The thing about the VN in particular is that it's essentially a coming-of-age story for Okabe as he's forced to mature in the face of a series of genuinely incredibly harrowing events. The anime doesn't give you anywhere near the sense of scale the VN does because it has to fit the format and jingle enough keys to keep the average anime fan's attention instead of allowing itself to be a slow burn deeply compelling story.

I know not everyone is going to engage with media like this but for me it was a really potent experience.

I didn't like Monster. As someone that grew up watching 90s and early 00s serial thrillers and mystery dramas, Monster was such a disappointment. I went like 15 episodes in before I gave up. Something about everything being so telegraphed, being able to see the incoming twists and know exactly when a character will die. A lot of the time if the writing is compelling and its acted well I can ignore it. However, with Monster it just felt so barebones as if just to be incredibly basic in its execution. Maybe if I had watched it when I was younger and it just came out, possibly. I just found it incredibly dull and didn't care for its mystery or the questions it was posing.
