70mm film has a larger surface area than 35mm film resulting in a higher resolution picture when projected. It also contains more audio channels than 35mm film allowing for surround sound instead of just stereo. Films shot on 70mm were also able to have a wider aspect ratio than ones shot on 35mm.

Back in the day 70mm had 4-track stereo while 35mm had only stereo, but nowadays this is irrelevant.

70mm has a native aspect ratio of 2.20:1 which is slightly less wide than anamorphic (=cinemascope) 35mm at 2.35:1. However Ultra Panavision or MGM Camera 65 (same thing on a technical level) was 70mm with a 1.25x anamorphic lens, resulting in the even wider 2.76:1 aspect ratio, but this was only used for a handful of films including Ben-Hur, the last one in 1969 iirc until Tarantula revived the format for Hateful Eight.

The larger negative area of 70mm is really quite noticeable and can look gorgeous; I've seen 70mm prints of Lawrence of Arabia and 2001 and it's really impressive cinematography.

Oh to add to this, I meant because eventually 35mm prints gained digital soundtracks which were as good or better than the old 4-track stereo of 70mm. Also more recent 70mm prints don't have the 4-track stereo magnetic tracks anymore, iirc something about environmental issues of the chemicals needed.

Yeah, I've seen both 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia in 70mm before and I am going to see them again. The ship models flying through space in 2001 are so incredible to see on the big screen. It is a completely mesmerizing experience. My dad has never seen Lawrence of Arabia and was just going to watch it at home on his TV, but I told him it was worth it to wait and see it in the theater. We're going next weekend.

Membership is $85 a year, but you don't need it to see most of the films. Only Amadeus and Short Cuts are member exclusives I think. Normally it just gives you $5 off every ticket which is worth it for me because I go to a lot of screenings.

I would if I had a gf. I almost never use my membership. Last movie I saw was a 10pm showing of After Hours at the Los Feliz spot like 2 years ago. It was kino but I can just watch shit at home.

At home there are too many distractions and options for things to do and I end up just watching youtube or whatever. When a screening for a film I've been meaning to watch shows up on the calendar it gives to me something to anticipate and be excited about. It's also an excuse to get out of the house. I really don't mind going to the movies by myself.

I get that. Most of the time though I don't have a problem paying attention at home. But it's hard for me to get out of the house to see something I've already seen, and I've seen so many. I'd much prefer it with company. New releases, I go by myself all the time.
