He did everything wrong. He engaged in homosexuality in order to "get ahead". He traded sexual favors for money which meant he didn't respect himself enough. Sure he killed the guy but that was more out of shame. He gave himself to another man for a night of comfort and was ravaged for it. Then later on Griffith forces himself on a princess and then himself gets raped, abused and left for dead in a dungeon. He then goes on to betray all of his friends and rapes his best bro's girlfriend because he couldn't stand the idea of not being the most important thing in people's lives.
I used to insist that I wanted to be like Griffith because he got his Good End. He overcame the odds, etc. But no, all he did was trample over and abuse the good nature his friends afforded him and then he coped with their loss by insisting that they are willing sacrifices for him to get to his glory. We can all walk the path of the straight and narrow to achieve our glory. Griffith is using corpses of the dead to ascend to Godhood. And to make matters worse now he's actively employing unclean spirits and demons and folding them into his own army next to humans in order to have a steady hold of the land.
Griffith is essentially a type of Anti-Christ. Beautiful, charismatic, homosexual, corrupted, selfish, only focused on what "he can do" for others. All of the souls he's showing to the people of the world as a show of "they're moving on" or actually corrupted and are either slaved to do his bidding or they're on their way to hell. He just paints a pretty picture so that the living can consider themselves "lucky" to be able to witness that and they hope to one day also be one of the glittery souls Griffith uses a light display to calm the hearts and minds of the public.
Griffith sucks. And what sucks more if that I honestly can't see a way for Guts to walk right up and kill him. He even came back and took Casca again so, like, what's even the point?

Guts himself overestimated Griffith, Guts was assuming the victory he obtained over Griffith would not destroy him, but that wasn't the case. Griffith got careless, engaged in self-destructive behaviour and landed his butt in jail.
