This is legit awesome. It's a mainstream crowd pleaser, but the editing and visuals are off the charts. How is this not a /tv/ cult favorite? It's not an exaggeration to say Orson Welles would be impressed by the editing techniques of this movie.

It honestly starts to feel like it was dragging on by the third race.

I agree, there was a little bit of that because Speed is pretty much unstoppable as a racer and the plot is pretty straightforward. However, I think the final lap after Speed "awakens" is one of the best feel-good moments and visual sequences in film.

I think they may still have been dudes at this point.

It's always nice to see new levels of film expression. The exposition dump in the beginning of Speed Racer was handled beautifully as well, with the parallel camerawork, match cuts and frame crawls.

I'm 32, but you're right that I got to this movie woefully late. But you see /tv/ favorites endure, e.g., Baneposting.

Idk if I'd call it retard kino, but it's definitely not trying to be like Solaris or Persona or Mulholland Drive.

She was very cute in this. The bottom-up shot of her legs while she's in the chopper is great.

A lot of people have acknowledged this movie was underrated. Strange how The Dark Knight kinda sucks but was so highly regarded, but this was pretty much spat upon. Anti-camp and visually disgusting versus campy and visually overwhelming but unique. Dunno, 2008 was weird I guess.

It's a teen-level anime. It was a deliberate decision to make things look plasticky so that it seems faithful to the anime aesthetic.
