He's much better on stage than on film. Everything he's done on Broadway especially has been fantastic. Some actors are just like that for some reason.

I will never understand musicals. When someone breaks into a song, I cringe, when the lyrics are super descriptive and it is followed by a montage, it's unbearable. I like theater, I like music, I can even get into opera, but this style of broadway musical is completely lost on me.
