How are you supposed to have thoughtful science fiction in a setting constrained by 50-year-old notions of science and social progress?

Is the Star Trek franchise now only valuable for nostalgia-exploitation? Are form and brand to trump content and ideas forever now? Won't it ever be inventive and forward-looking again?

Measure of a Man is gay. It's ridiculous that Picard wouldn't bring up the existence of non-organic life, or how turning Data off is analogous to the Vulcan Nerve Pinch.

The one in the first season where they discover an inorganic life form made out of linked-together crystals, and gets into a fight with colonists that were draining the water or whatever that was linking the crystals together. Otherwise, they'd be rendered individually inert and the creature would die.

It'd be a good thing to bring up for the debate, not just because it is inorganic, but specifically because it's a collection of lifeless parts that has consciousness conducted through it, which is highly comparable to an android when you think about it.

I was inspired by the section of the mister Plinkett Star Trek Mistakes Video. ChatGPT did OK filling in the circled areas. But the upscale does look sort of shitty. I will give the show credit. I never did notice the black paper when it originally broadcast in SD format. I guess it is mainly noticeable in the blu-ray remaster.
