The Trinity detonation was 21 KT
Consider how awful Oppenheimer's """"explosion"""" looks compared to even this smaller bomb. The movie was bad and Nolan should feel bad.

The actual buildup to and reaction to the nuke was good, but I think they should have only shown people's reactions plus the massive glow of light from off-screen and the earth shaking and dust clouds falling, actually showing the explosion itself just didn't work because they were determined to get as much practical effects as possible and you can't really do that magnitude of an explosion practically, so it looked far too small and normal.

>The actual buildup to and reaction to the nuke was good,
That's what made the explosion way worse. Again The Day After did some pretty creative stuff with the film itself to make their nuke explosions look really menacing. For all the memeing about him, Nolan is a competent filmmaker, can't believe he saw that wet noodle and thought *good enough*

And hell, he's no stranger to explosions. His own previous film got cited in the thread >>212131603, they blew the fuck out of that whole building and it was really impressive in that film. It's just a nuke is a different magnitude of destruction altogether and he either had to hide the actual explosion, or accept that he would need to rely mainly on digital effects to create it. Cameron understood it, a long time ago now >>212132588, it's a nearly unfathomable level of destruction from a human perspective.

This is an admirable goal...but only if it works, which it clearly didn't in this movie. If they couldn't achieve the climactic moment of the movie satisfactorily with practical effects then they should have realized it, cut there losses and found a different solution.

Even just a few cuts would probably improve it, they showed a couple of distance shots and it makes it the explosion look very small and not at all otherworldly, if you removed those it might come off better. If you're solidly against the idea of doing a digital shot of the entire blast radius and shockwave, anyway.

I think they probably only had the budget for one explosion, and where stuck reacting to this underwhelming nothingburger as a result. That's why most of the shots are of people reacting, or anything other than the actual explosion. It looks pathetic compared to even the archive footage of the real trinity test.

There's an edit someone did a while back where they cut the score and everything but the reaction shots and it was definitely way more effective. Just a haunting silence and all these different faces trying to reconcile what they're witnessing.

The Trinity explosion in season 3 of Twin Peaks is the best CGI explosion ever filmed. The Oppenheimer explosion might be the most disappointing explosion of all time since the entire 3 hour long movie revolves around it. Even the Dark Knight hospital explosion had more impact to it, and that was just a single building.

>>212133942
him glimpsing something like that through a veiwer that was basically some shots from the old nuclear tests would have been preferable. Or just give in and use CGI for this one bit, maybe CGI to "fluff up" their practical effects explosion into a more proper mushroom cloud

In fact it doesn't even match the intense lighting of the scene, it doesn't look like it should cause that level of light so far away (because it quite literally did not, lighting rigs did). So it's illusion breaking at a pivotal moment.

and SMALLER than the trinity test.
But more importantly it's tested at night, see how bright it is and literally turns the world to daylight.

You're right that shockwave is completely missing and light from the explosion non-existent.
