I liked Star Trek IV: Voyage Home. I watched it several times as a child. I attended schools. I went to colleges and universities. I worked for decades in hospitals. I grew up.

FUCK you, "Doctor" McCoy.
FUCK you.

Going around a 21st century hospital like it's a medieval medicine from the Dark Ages, openly slandering medical staff for their treatment and outright stating they're wrong and evil for taking action to solve provenly (even by himself) correct diagnostic conditions.
And what does he do to hammer this joke home to the audience? Gives the old woman a single pill "cure-all" that suddenly solves all her liver problems. Anchors a scientific device 3 centuries from the future from a collective Federation of Planets of aliens and civilizations onto Chekov's forehead and pushes a button.
Not only does this specifically betray the Hippocratic Oath he, himself, swears his life by, but it blatantly disrupts Prime Directive promises and time-travel pledges. FUCK! You've "saved" a woman from the past in a previous episode, too!! It DESTROYED mankind!! LEARN YOUR GODDAMNED LESSON!

AND FUCK YOU, McCoy! I DON'T HAVE A PANACEA AND A MAGIC WAND TO SOLVE MY PROBLEMS! You spoiled asshole piece of shit son of a bitch bastard.

Star Trek TOS was set in 2266.
I wonder how well he'd take to 2594 Dr. McCoy calling him a pig butcher for his use of a tri-corder to diagnose an imperfect human, or how 2594 McCoy would openly sigh about how disgusting it was to see humans voluntarily harming themselves by walking and ingesting nutrients. How barbaric!

His ethics are blatantly against anything "unnatural." A person is not allowed to tamper with their body in any way, especially surgical tampering.
While he's skeptical and outright hates bioengineering DNA, he 100% endorses picking "only the best." He's extremely hypocritical in that "the best way is the only way, but you're not allowed to try. That's sick."

Let me guess; you think "aging" is perfectly natural and that humans have a lifespan of ~80 years? How primitive! It's like you think harpooning a whale for food is perfectly acceptable! Or growing a field of corn is a completely logical step in agricultural progress! Oh, I know!! Your planet's atmosphere doesn't have a axioprotexgandialshai undyyuu lagiradipindiction shavfii layer created from the introduction of tennenluctant by Gillicato, does it!? I'll NEVER visit your time period, how Hellish!!

>You think using a tri-corder to diagnose any failures in your patient is HELPFUL!?
>My God, man!! Waving radiation at 10 million hz per second in and out of living tissue is more than murder, it's shatters entire organic ecosystems both here AND in Planet Guesswhere!
>You're a genocidal maniac using that to solve your issues!!!
>Now get out of my way while I push this button on my macguffin!

It particularly funny when Scotty tells a plexiglass manufacturer that he'll give them "transparent aluminum" if they make a little bit for him overnight. And, to prove he's serious, he's brought to a DELL computer and casually interacts with it, letting the audience laugh about how Scotty isn't acting very aware... and then seconds later inputs binary code and constructs visual representation of the "transparent aluminum" he just promised.

Scotty helps create the solution and generates trust through his professional dialogue.
Bones is a flagrant asshole who screams in a hospital at patients and staff and then miraculously solves all errors with a magic box.

They're both "funny and plausible," when you consider their "occupations." Doctors are all "condescending pricks" after all.
But while Scotty generates positive impressions with the application of his large experience and, Bones is a fucking fucklefuck who screams "no fair, because I said so!!" during his make-believe game no one invited him to.

"Dialysis? What is this the dark ages?"- man who knows what dialysis is, who would know what time period it was used in, after travelling to that time period and seeing someone undergoing dialysis.

>This patient doesn't have perfectly functioning organs to filter toxins out of her body, likely due to her age and lifelong addictions, so the medical staff prevenly solve this problem with the most minimal amount (and cheapest level) of interaction via therapy!
>I can't believe these idiots don't have access to 300+ years of more science and 900 different alien species from other planets to provide them with practically heavenly resources that solve something like "injury!"
>When I find a doctor around here, I'll mock him!
Now Kirk, use your Klingon phazer and point it at them. I'm sure you're very threatening to these people by pointing a kid's toy at them while visibly in your 50s.

Be honest, if you went 3 centuries into the past and saw a 22 year old crazy woman that was being prayed for and regularly given bleedings for her depression you’d say “My God, all she needs is some Lexapro and Zoloft and Cymbalta and Effexor and Trazodone and Wellbutrin and Ritalin and Adderall and Anafranil and Seroquel and Loestrin and a vaccine!”

Yeah. I'd get about two pharmaceuticals in before recognizing I'm the one being an idiot for wondering why they aren't giving a women from 766 B.C.E. Benedryl and feeling shame. Like, how could these people possibly "cure" this woman when the only cure possible is literally a gaseous herb from the planet Zyloootrofl that can only be stored in a metal that isn't discovered until the City of Atlantis arrives with the Herrington rayguns.

McCoy's problem is, for some reason, it was totally okay for him to give "dying-old-woma" ZySpiceMustFlowFlexoRegowzerill and his insulting dynamic towards physicians performing acute surgery instead of using HyperImpossibleRayTransplantor. His future tools (which are completely unavailable to anyone) are so obvious to him and everyone else is unholy and evil for even CONSIDERING trying something else. He's justified because... it's a comedy! He's always right, he's the doctor!

>Why isn't he wearing a mask!? Who let him in here, this isolation!!
>Fuck you, primitive doctor from 1987! I don't need a mask while I use my future magic box! YOU IDIOT!
It's intensely frustrating for Bones to be so petty and childish when we're meant to respect his medicinal genius and experience.

1. yes it is comedy.
2. McCoy is an old curmudgeon
3. He's ESPECIALLY an old curmudgeon in the Star Trek film verse because he was pulled out of a comfy retirement, twice.
Yelling at clouds and telling younger people why they are wrong (even if they aren't), is the established accepted perk of existing longer than others.

In Voyager the EMH Mark II was mocking the Doctor and calling him a medieval brute for not knowing how to use medical tech that was only a few years more advanced than what he had.

Bones cannot learn from his own mistakes. That'd be insulting to ever admit being wrong, and he can't do that. That would hurt his ego. Other people have to forcibly stop him otherwise he'll act without any reason beyond "I want to."
