The Irishman feels totally different from GoodFellas and Casino, it just feels far more matured, like a cask of aged wine from Sicily or somewhere. I will admit, this scene is impossible to defend, and looks retarded, however, the movie is exceptional and very good.
Joe Pesci said 'he didn't wanna do the gangster thing again', and he was not going to do the project, but Scorcese insisted that 'things would be different', and that's why Pesci did the project. It was different. It's tone is far more muted and old-fashioned than the stylized slickness and punchiness of GoodFellas and Casino. I personally loved the film, and found it a very touching and mature reflection on the nature of violence, mob life, family and crime. It was entertaining too, the uncanny deaging effects really don't distract from the story at all past the first half hour.
It's a great film, regardless of some flaws it has. I've watched it 3 times now, and found it's message and theme to be very touching and important.
