I remember a hollywood writer indirectly explaining it in a short story he wrote.
LA used to be a white city and people moved to it for a better life. Demographic change happened rapidly over the decades. These people still remained but the place changed. So thats what they write about.

He grew up in LA but it also sort of serves as his personal philosophy. LA, especially during his day, was chill and cool. Especially in comparison to NYC which was a little more self important and pretentious.
