I actually appreciate the family drama and therapy scenes more than the mob aspect of the show.

>Christopher's depression and wanting to be recognized as something bigger than a gangster
>Tony wanting a normal life but addicted to luxury and whores
>AJ carrying the entire Sopranos' family curse on his shoulders and wanting to kill himself
>Therapy being a waste of time and money.

This show was never about the mobsters, it was about the human relations, human psyche, the inherent vice in all people. It actually got a lot of mafia stuff wrong, e.g. Paulie insulting Chrissy's (a made man's) baby daughter, Johnny wanting to whack Ralph over the fat Ginny joke, the whole Season 1, etc.

You are correct, but don't forget that Sopranos is also quite meta parody. That's why the first season has so many references to the Godfather and Martin Scorsese, including casting his look alike for the club scene. And don't forget the famous diner in Italy scene that btfoes the Italian American nonsense

He and Tarantino are insane on this question. The Sopranos is better than any of Scorsese’s mafia movies, and The Wire is better than any movie Tarantino has made. Additionally, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon are both too long to be movies and suffer because of that. If Scorsese’s ego had allowed it, he could have made great miniseries instead.

What is funny is, the current situation in Boston/Providence has the mafia growing again. The FBI closed their oc office which was mainly LCN cases this year and now the ranks are growing as it's estimated they added 10 soliders already this year between Mass and RI, with a new offshoot being set up in Connecticut. Their main industry now is cocaine (including distro thru the Hells Angels and now black gangs), gambling (offering better rates than the draftkings, etc and action to those banned by the big legal names), and marijuana (some idiot was just caught in rural RI the other day with a uhaul filled with marijuana clippings meant to be destroyed he was bringing down to brooklyn for sale).

Mad Men used to be up there for me but it's one of those shows that just doesn't stand up to repeated viewings. In reality it's on the same level as Peaky Blinders, completely carried by the aesthetic and period, there's no meat to it and every season is just a retelling of the same story.

Yep. I've heard from people too many of the 'homeless' panhandlers are all mafia owned. There's also their involvements in construction, waste collection (RFP in RI is a known mafia front), and of course food services.
