I hate how edgy the New Jedi Order books were like dropping a fucking moon on Chewy and killing him in book 1 . Killing characters is a cheap tactic and something Lucas intentionally avoided, I think rightly. Other than that, the characters were still more consistent than anything Disney has done and as a threat to the galaxy, the YV were way more interesting than a watered-down Empire.

Controversial Opinion: It would have been cool if the reason Luke turned on his students was because the Emperor's ghost was constantly trying to mindfuck him, do the whole Frodo Baggins thing with the ring and shit. The empire did most of that vator in the films was always very personal with his evil. He was not a military leader but a fixer for the empire. His main goal in the films was to bring Luke to the dark side.

Vader's initial failure was that he couldn't do this and sought easy power in the dark side. Then with Luke's help he was finally able to and the Force moved through him to stop the Emperor and Anakin was able to become one with the Force when he died.
