I don't get it. 28 Years Later cost $60m to make (where the fuck that money went who knows, they shot it on iphones) so it has to make money back outside the UK. And yet the ending was extremely specific to the UK. Very few non-Brits would know who this guy is channelling, how bizarre it is and why it's very sinister when he befriends a young boy. Even Zoomer Brits would likely only be vaguely aware of who he was. Why write something which will leave 90% of your target audience baffled?

I would like to know who he was based on, but as an American I think they did enough showing it was some sort of cult thing. No need to beat the audience over the head it was clear something was off with him and his friends.

To take a creative risk maybe? It will alienate people, but not every film is written to satisfy every single person who walks into the movie theater.

28 years later is set in a world where civilization collapsed before Saville was outed as a child raper. To those Jimmies, he is still a hero.

It's called artistic integrity. If someone wanted to just make money they'd be making Marvel movies.
Also 60 million is not a huge budget, it's not hard for a horror movie (especially one that is a part of a recognizible IP) to make that money back and more. It has already passed 100 milliom worldwide. Even with a drop-off that is predicted it will still be a success by the end of it's run.

I read it as a parody or a "fuck you" to the kind of brain dead audience that just wanted endless fight fight fights and spectacle. In this respect I loved it.

From the global perspective, Jimmy was a young boy, alone in a dangerous world. He's grown and managed to start a following of warriors. Spike is in a similar position, though he volunteered to enter this world solo. Jimmy sees himself in Spike and without the Jimmy Saville connection the audience could infer they'll do a master and apprentice situation. If you know anything about Jimmy Saville, Jimmy collecting Spike will inevitably fall apart.
Spike and Jimmy are essentially the same character thrown into similar situations, Spike has a sense of justice and morals, Jimmy is a cutthroat survivalist, BOTH have the makings of a great leader, it just depends on their intentions. I'm looking forward to the sequels and their dynamic, but I really hate how Danny Boyle isn't directing them, so we'll see.

I get that but it's just so alienating to a non-UK audience. And at the end of the day it is a commercial product.

It certainly threw me. Totally subverted expectations. And made me very curious to see where this goes.

Tarrantino did the same in the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Don't lie, no one gives a shit about Manson or the Family in 2019. And film earned fuckton of money.

it's supposed to be alienating you dumb faggot. The film gets you lulled into this semi-medieval world only to whiplash and remind you they're in some sort of post apocalypse. No matter how romanticized a simple life of villagers and hunters may seem, there's always gonna be some stranger in ridiculous clothes and a knack for killing to remind you this world isn't some fairytale.

Once upon a time in Hollywood was awful. I watched it at 2x speed on porntube, skipped all the scenes of Margot Robbie dancing and Brad Pitt driving, and it was still way too long and boring.

This is what shooting on an iPhone looks like. This is a rigged up iPhone. Also that's really the budget for both movies, not just the first one.

I remember seeing a documentary about saville, but did not make that connection at all, I'll give OP credit on that but I stand by what said before, that they did a good enough job establishing something was off with him that you didn't need to know it was a saville thing. Thanks either way anon.

Its not. Also, professional video cameras have a shit ton of stuff attached the them too. Its just that iPhones have gotten to the point where they are good enough, and light enough, it kinda outweighs buying traditional stuff. Plus you can do shit like >>212164465 was asking for. Pic related.

Who cares? Moves are full of references 99% of people won't get. If your entire movie hinges on it and can't stand on its own legs then it's a failure anyway.

>waah waah nobodys gonna know who jimmy saville is muh ending is le ruined!
maybe if you weren't so busy obsessing over how you never got molested as a kid, you'd be able to make the simple connection to the beginning of the movie when the kid got the necklace. ending made total sense to me, because i don't give a fuck who may or may not have been the inspiration for the character and i paid attention from the start.
