Les Documents Interdits (in English, The Forbidden Files) is the scariest and most intriguing found footage I’ve eve seen.

Unfortunate how hard it is to find online.

I also noticed this new movie, The Woman in the Yard, is clearly ripping off/taking homage from an episode of the forbidden files called the Witch

Basically in that episode, you see the OP pic of what was believed to be a witch as various supernatural occurrences happened and the locals were terrified

Imagery is too similar to be coincidental. They even both have it set in some Latino place with Spanish speakers

Yeah, I think they did rip it off because the original series came back in popularity just a couple years ago. I haven't seen it the film tho

I found them all on a Google Drive. They’re not “scary” so much as creepy. Mostly just interesting mini stories. (One episode is as short as 4 minutes). No jump scares or attempts to frighten the viewer in the ways you normally expect from found footage fiction

Also very well made. Clearly they had a very low biudget, so took advantage of using old fashioned cameras for footage supposedly from the 50’s or 60’s. And not really needing much special effects to demonstrate unnatural phenomena

Also very rarely do any of the mysterious things that happen get real explanations. Very interesting ones

Here’s the episodes for anybody interested

Like half of the videos are literally just a bunch of uninteresting shaky footage... and then suddenly le person walks off camera
The narration:
>It seems something was about to happen...
>He is gone, without a trace, there is no explanation
>Jean Phillipe was never seen again

Really is great. Ideas ahead of its time. The concept of being accidentally trapped in some pocket dimension in a house, while still technically having the small lifeline of a camera crew with a life feed while trying to navigate this impossible situation is cool

I remember the episode about the Soviet camp where the people with robotic limbs lived because they can’t function in regular society any more

Any other movie or tv show would have them be some monsters but instead the Soviets just took people who lost limbs in factories and shit, offered to replace them with equivalent or better limbs, and used them as human Guinea pigs for potential weapon applications

Result is just some aged town full of people with malfunctioning, shit tilt made soviet tech robot arms and legs that keep accidentally getting stuck or breaking walls because they’re super strong and dangerous to themselves and others by accident. And of course the Soviets do a terrible job maintaining their tech

At first you think it’s just some wholesome memories from an old guy who donated his film archives to the local historic society since he’s old now and has no need for them

Later on as he narrates you get the implication that the neighbors wife didn’t “leave him” and was murdered. Hence why the Neighbor moved in his secretary he was presumably having an affair with later

The ending reveals that the narrator either murdered the neighbors wife with/for him. And bought the new wife a dog because he wanted it to discover the wife’s body which was buried in the neighbors back yard.

The odd reactions to this by the new wife, the narrator and the Neighbor seem to imply they all already knew she was murdered and the narrator was more voyeuristically filming the neighbors new wife to capture some reaction from finding it

The narrator helps rebury the body even deeper, and everybody moves on and forgets about her.

The end text then reveals this tape was given by the police department, who presumably got involved and arrested the narrator upon seeing this and finding the now decades old body. His narration being him in the modern day confessing to his involvement

As for WHY the two families were this crazy, we won’t know. Although the fact their kids seemed to leave and move far away as soon as possible suggests they weren’t seen in a great light by most

I found a description of the episodes:

The Divers
Rare and unexplained footage from naval commando archives reveals the distinct presence of a powerful figure in the ocean. As the commandoes' boats approach, a diver enters the water and is immediately taken under by the "creature". Diver and creature break the surface some 500 meters from the initial attack in a matter of seconds. Captured on film, it remains an unfathomable mystery to this day.

The Child
Only six weeks old, baby Peter is filmed levitating his teddy bear. at six months he's flinging cups off his high chair with a stare, and at six years old Peter has drowned the dog in the family's pool. Video tape highlights of Peter's telekinesis are sure to shame the most unruly poltergeists.

The Ghosts
Documented by an amateur camera operator, Miguel takes us and another passenger on a journey to the Nameless Ones. They are ghosts from the unknown who bring to us messages that sometimes we do not understand.

Shipwreck
The lone survivor of the wreck of the Véga that mysteriously went down on August 7 1950, has filmed his daily rituals. He goes for eighteen days without touching his provisions of food or drink and when the opportunity arises for him to be rescued he chooses not to shoot his flame thrower. As his camera documents for us, he is the witness to a supernatural phenomenon. When the boat becomes beached, the camera and this film, plus the words 'those who have seen it can never come back' which were scrawled on the tarpaulin, are his only remains.

The Picnic
In-camera edited film shot by Kevin Riley on July 11 1970. Cindy, Stephen, Karen and Kevin head off in a Kombi van for a night under the stars in the Roaxaca Zone. The native Indians call it 'The river of stones that runs over the sleeping forest'. One of the party, Stephen hears music in the distance. It is inaudible to the rest of the group. What Kevin accidentally documents is the disappearance of Stephen who is inexplicably drawn to the music he hears.

The E.T.
An encounter between earthlings and their guest from outer space took place and was documented in Takohamo. On July 19 1969 Olsen II (the guest) died in mysterious circumstances. But perhaps his fate was decided a long time ago. On the next day, July 20 1969 Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. The Takohamo mystery deepens a little more.

The Ferguson Case
This episode looks at THE AT ONCE SHOW which goes to air live on the WACN channel in the USA. Its anchor tells of how Mrs Ferguson had rung the station to get help checking out some mysterious sounds in the manor house. THE AT ONCE team send a reporter to investigate, and what we see is the live to air footage that was captured but which in itself heightens the mystery of THE FERGUSON CASE.

The Crowns film the Youngs
An amateur filmmaker carefully documented the growing relationship between them as neighbours; the Crown and the Young families. Both wives had babies born within days of each other. They grew into children and then adults that fell in love with each other and left home. This picture of domestic / neighbourhood tranquility is disrupted by the divorce and remarrying of one of the partners. Time passes and the filmmaker obsessively documents the daily ritual of the neighbours next door. In that process he films the family's puppy's unearthing of a bloodied glove which belonged to Maria Mendoza. The Mendoza Case was still a mystery until this footage was handed over to the authorities on the death of the husband.

The Soldier
In Sicily in 1943, an unknown soldier films two strange figures as they walk into the ocean and disappear. Leaving his camera on the beach, the soldier films himself as he walks into the water - crossing the unknown frontier.

The Madman of the Crossroads
The incredible story of Tibor Nagy who claims to have filmed his excursion to the moon when he and his family were abducted by aliens. Tibor shows his moon movie to fellow believers at a spot near where he was taken. He also pines for his aliens to take him back to the moon.

The Witch
A phantom terrorises the inhabitants of a Spanish village, that eventually is displaced. As this amateur film reveals, there is never any end to an exodus. A journey to the land of those 'one does not mention'.

Siberia
SCAR is the code name of a programme of bio-mechanics to improve human performance which could turn people into semi-robots. Piotr is one of the 12,500 who people this security camp. He lets the camera document how 'they' reconstructed his arm after it had been virtually crushed in a work accident. That footage was marked: STRATEGIC MATERIAL - TOP SECRET, and plainly reveals the harsh reality of the forgotten people of the Cold War.

Yeah, it does resemble the type of horror zoomers like. It was just so ahead of its time, 1989. I just think the concept was really cool, like the IMDb page says.

>A French series that became a cult sensation, in trying to treat supernatural phenomena such as ghosts and witches with a documentary style approach.

Its not actually scary horror like today. What's scary about it is how calm and scientific narration is, it's more like a psychological horror of "what if this thing was was real/happened and someone managed to record it. What do you think, is this real?". Found footage series without the voyeurism?

That would be Begotten (1989). I think I remember the found footage lore story was that a family of cannibals created from incest filmed a home movie on their property/farm in the middle of nowhere on 8mm film in the 70s or 60s or some shit. And that the "actors" involved were some of the family members, and that some of them were mentally ill while filming. The the home movie contained footage of a murder and other weird stuff.

The Forbidden Files is FAR more entertaining. Quality sci-fi.
