I just saw this film and it's honestly one of the most transgressive rawest pieces of art i have ever seen, no wonder it makes romantic western humanists seethe.

Haven’t seen it in years. I remember it having a disturbing story but a stark set piece. I bet it doesn’t hold up.

I have the memory of my dad watching this on tv as a kid and he was actually into it too which is strange to me cause he’s a pleb and a Danish drama slow burn movie is typically not the kind of thing he’d be in to.

It’s an intentionally Brechtian film where the fact it is a story is drawn to you intentionally by the sets being lines on the ground and all the obvious props. This is done because it is like Bertolt Brecht, using a fake setting with obvious plot devices to make social commentary (Dreigroschenoper as Marxism in 20s Germany and Dogville as individualism in the US).

Dogville is best paired with Europa because Dogville is mocking and criticizing US society while Europa is a criticism of Germany and has the opposite issue (Germany as too collective ie Nazis and America as too individualist, everyone in the town’s claims of being a community is twisted as they torment Nicole Kidman because each one is afraid of the gangsters and takes it upon themselves to abuse her due to having power over her with zero regulation to stop their mistreatment).

Let me guess.
She's oppressed because in that picture she's a woman who's wearing a thing on her head. That means it's Handmaiden's Tale.
There's not a chance in hell that that woman is not oppressed in whatever this film is.

Tell me, am I right? Is that the message?

It’s about the destruction of grace (literally represented by a woman named Grace) in America because of individualism and lack of social cohesion. It’s one of the best movies on American society

The woman was on the run from gangsters and the town takes her in but as time goes on they realize they have total control of her with no consequences so they take advantage of her in increasingly brutal ways until eventually they decide they are done with her and that they’ll turn her over to the gangsters she’s running from.

Eventually it is revealed that the gangsters were chasing her because she’s daughter of a mob boss and didn’t approve of his criminal activities. She says that the people she encountered were so cruel and worthless that human nature can’t possibly be worth saving (her name being Grace is relevant here) so she decides to join back her dad and their first order is to gun down the townspeople.

The narrator concludes the film with a scathing pun. He asks whether Grace had left the people or whether the people themselves chose to leave Grace.

The sets, names, etc are obvious like that because the film is an homage to a playwright named Bertolt Brecht. Read Morher courage and her children and Threepenny opera in particular and you’ll see a lot of thematic similarities

Most people would have trouble getting into this style of theater/ filmmaking but I feel it works well as do most of the people itt apparently

>Mother Courage is an example of Brecht's concepts of epic theatre and Verfremdungseffekt, or "V" effect; preferably "alienation" or "estrangement effect" Verfremdungseffekt is achieved through the use of placards which reveal the events of each scene, juxtaposition, actors changing characters and costume on stage, the use of narration, simple props and scenery. For instance, a single tree would be used to convey a whole forest, and the stage is usually flooded with bright white light, whether the scene depicted is a winter's night or a summer's day. Several songs, interspersed throughout the play, are used to underscore the themes of the play. They also require the audience to think about what the playwright is saying.

I don’t understand why you’re so worked up on a film you haven’t even seen

I haven’t seen this movie in ages and I wouldn’t remember a detail like that however, I imagine the fact they are weak malleable characters doing whatever their parents say and in the end they get massacred as a lesson to their mother (“if she can hold in her tears I’ll let her live”) might have something to do with it.

Like I said I haven’t seen the movie in years though

So then it's a waste of time.
The entire reason you know the word "Grace" at all is only because of Jesus Christ and his Grace will not be revoked.
As for the "le bad people" part. I'm sure that town of entirely white people is supposed to portray the world? How worthless. Considering the world at large is stupid. Indians rape, Chinese cheat, blacks steal.
Every single comfort you've ever had and felt in your entire life is because of some Christian invention, event, or phenomenon. So the idea of making a movie looking at "the world" and going, "Yuck! You're not good people" is so insane that it could only be a gimmick movie to be relevant in some way.

It is specifically about America and how we feign a cultural community but really we are rootless individualists. Europa from 1991 is about Germany and their collectiveness. Each film asks about man’s place in society- the individual in charge of his destiny vs the individual as part of a collective

Women love rape scenes. I worked at a movie theatre and I only ever had fat lefty nerds ever ask if there was a rape scene or anything triggering in a movie before I sold them tickets. My gf would always give me pussi after we watched a movie with a rape in it. All women are whores until they hit menopause.

Yes, that Anon wants to make this seem a feminist film to suit his largely irrelevant politics into this thread for some reason. The movie is more on man’s nature and highly analogous to Christian thought in saying that maybe man is so fallen he doesn’t deserve to be redeemed. Grace exists in the world but men refuse her in their hearts.
