It was back to norm but still compeletly lifeless show piece like everything else he makes these days. He should keep making animation movies, he's dead style works better with those.

It's barely cropped. The movie is shot in 4:3 (or similar, whatever) because now everyone has widescreen TVs, so it's cool to pillarbox your fucking picture every time someone views it at home. Great.

I grew up in the era of pan-and-scan, and that was way worse, nigger. But I still find pillarboxing way more annoying than letterboxing, and in most theaters, you're just going to see a digital projection that doesn't take up the whole screen either, because cinema workers no longer actually adjust the fucking curtains/screen to suit the movie. Shooting your movie like a pretty postcard just to be different is gay, fuck Wes Anderson.

Um achtually it's in 1.50:1. Which is indeed an obscure aspect ratio. At least his ratios were used for an artistic purpose in Grand Budapest. Here it really did just feel masturbatory, and a lot of shots didn't even feel like they were blocked around it. A lot of cutting actors off in ways that weren't very "aesthetic" for Wes.

It's explained several times. Are you by chance a zoomer who looked at his phone more than at the screen?
