I think it's pretty clear that the whole thing has run it's course. Nobody is going to start disliking him but it's a Keanu thing where the annoying obsession has passed but still remains well liked.
He reasonably should have boosted a movie like The Fall Guy high above what it actually made but he didn't.

The book is fun, light, fast and entertaining. It has a wholesome feel and a satisfying ending. It's not a masterpiece, but the story is engaging enough. It's not wallmart scifi either. It's somewhere in the middle.

The trailer feels off. The tone is not right. They tried to copy The Martian too much I think. The tone is different between those two though and it feels wrong. Still, I'm moderately excited, the Goose can act and the alien is very fun, if they do him justice.

microorganisms colonize stars and eat their energy
our sun is dimming
all erf governments unite behind a mission to the only star that is not infected
terrorists kill some of the crew
r3dditor science teacher ends up on the craft as replacement
the ship goes to the uninfected star, all crew are dead except the science teacher
the story jumps between present and past
the great twist is that he was forced to join the mission
another twist - there's an ayy lmao ship in the system
after some tension turns out the alien is a total bro rock spider (roughly dog sized)
communicates through sound and echolocation
they find the planet of origin for the star eating microorganism
another microorganism is eating it hence the the only star that's not infected
r3dditor and ayy lmao part ways for their respective systems
predator eats the furl of the ayy lmao
r3dditor must decide whether to save earth and let his spider bro and his people die or sacrifice erf by helping the ayy lmaos
he sends the predators to erf with a probe and gives his fuel to the spider, joining him, thus saving both worlds
ending is r3dditor lives on rock spider world inside a dome eating burgers made from his own cloned flesh
light from the our sun reaches that planet and it's normal - his mission was a success and he saved both worlds

I think that's it. The alien is genuinely a fun bro in the book which mean s they will most likely mess it up in the movie.

They stakes are really high in the book. Once the sun starts dimming there is chaos and panic. All governments unite and give UNLIMITED POWER and a total pardon for all actions to a woman, forgot who she was, maybe NASA chief or something like that, she builds the spaceship program, etc. There are constant terror attacks and stuff.

My only problem with this is microorganisms could, possibly consume a star, but materials that organisms would be made from would be made from the materials that those stars manufacture, limiting engagement range.

I.E. the "Micro-organisms" would have to form a gigantic symbiotic Dyson Sphere a long way away from the star to surround the star at very long range. And that would require a vast volume of organic material under insane conditions.
Which could then be harnessed for energy, extended, manipulated, etc.

He spends almost the entire book trying to shake off amnesia that turns out to be drug-induced and remembering why/how he joined the mission is the final thing he remembers only a couple of chapters towards the end of the book. The story starts with him waking up on the ship and remembering absolutely nothing, including his name.

They don't orbit the star, they fly towards it until they're charged and then propel themselves back to Venus or whatever host planet they've chosen in that system. The only thing that's kind of fucky is how perfect their energy absorption is, which they handwave in the book by being quantum hax.

That was only in the martian, mostly because the main character was slowly losing his mind and trying to cope with his situation. It was also told through him recording audio logs, so it was like him talking to a person

In Hail Mary the main character is much more composed the entire time and is generally more stressed because his goal is way more important. any comedy from hail mary comes from the two main characters trying to communicate

It’s not hard sci-fi either, people are saying the Expanse is hard sci-fi when it’s really not. The Martian was hard sci-fi, but PHM is not. Unless NASA can invent a new radical hull material the chance of instantly getting cancer is high if you leave the earth’s magnetic field. It becomes exponentially high if you leave the Kepler belt.

Not as strong as The Martian, if only because the 'science your way out of a problem' narrative is murky.

'No Food, Must Grow Taters' you can follow. Environment selection on vats of space Amoeba is unfamiliar and less interesting. That's going to be the tough sell in the movie.

The process is narrated and explained in the book. Can’t they also do this in the movie? Or will it come off as shoehorned exposition? Unless there is a whole thing of Ryland going “crazy” from isolation or whatever and thinking out loud throughout the whole movie, narrating his reasoning.

Those sections of Hail Mary were tedious. Tank of space mildew does this. Change settings on tank. Space mildew does that. Repeat until you have a tank of magic space mildew.

That's where you start skimming in the book. Can't imagine them doing that sort of detail in the movie. The audience will go out for a bathroom break and never come back.

Decided to pirate and read the book because of this thread and I just like sci fi.
Definitely reddit in essence, lots of crying and girlbossing but I liked the rock spider friend. Competent guy meeting competent alien guy who work together without drama is something I appreciate. One thing I wish was explained is how chinaman and russian woman died in transit. Feels like that would be an important thing to explore considering protagonist man didn't die and then his exit plan is doing the same thing again. Unless I skimmed a page too hard, it's never actually said.
Could have been better but could have been worse, weird that a lot of recent sci fi shit has spider people in it. Can't wait for the sequel where there's a gay human spider sex scene or something.

Yeah that’s basically what I imagined, only with bilateral symmetry and gunmetal in color. It should be dark because Ryland becomes aware of it only when it obscures a star or planet or something, so it’s gotta be real dark.

The ship in the movie looks stupid. What’s with those spikes? What could they possibly be intended for?

The reason you don't want flat surfaces isn't because of potential friction with an outside atmosphere. It's because of the atmosphere inside the spaceship. If you just google "pressure vessel" you'l notice that there are almost no flat surfaces

I fuck hate this stupid snark humor they’ve been hamfisting into everything for like a decade or more now , with characters cracking wise when it’s inappropriate to, like in life and death situations. “Uhhh that just happened”. It’s why I can barely tolerate movies anymore. The people depicted onscreen are a different species than those than inhabit this planet. They don’t speak or behave like anyone I’ve ever met. What the fuck am I even watching?

The book/story is a good one though and there is little if anything Reddit-tier in it to my recollection.

That's retarded because audiobooks with actors playing different roles is way better than watching a movie, often even better than reading. Dune audiobooks are great and so are james bond ones. Audiobooks are the shiznizzle.

First of all, no it’s not. Not even close. However I do think they fucked up revealing the existence of Rocky the alien, AND that he’s friendly with Ryland.. That came as a big shock in the middle of the book. But idk how compelling the movie would appear if they omitted him from the trailer.

The trailer also does not reveal what it is that’s “infecting” the sun and other stars. Though that information divulged in the beginning of the book.

>>212226268
Speaking of the above, you mentioned audiences will not follow something as straightforward as artificial selection. You think they’ll follow the energy to mass conversion of astrophage? Would be real gay if the movie changes what it is that is dimming the sun. I notice there is no petrova line in the trailer.

I forget exactly how it happens but astrophage is volatile as shit, releasing its energy all at once upon contact with light or co2 or something like that. It was a bunch of astrophage that exploded at the facility. Remember, Ryland and Rocky use astrophage to provide their ships’ thrust.

i'm pretty sure the "red glowing" shit around the hail mary in the trailer is supposed to be a petrova line, probably augmented by some sort of "infrared view" for the audience since it isn't in our visible spectrum. it seems like they're being pretty faithful to the book and without having astrophage as it is in the book the plot pretty much completely falls apart. there's no reason for them to modify its function or behavior.

Sooooooooo, why can't they send a team?
I get it in this story the high school science teacher is the one scientist who is either brilliant or expendable enough to send out into space untrained to reach another star. But what I mean is why send him out their alone? Why not send other astronauts and engineers to at least make sure the flight goes smoothly just encase of any mistakes or unforeseen events? Like maybe first contact. OK high school science teacher totally good enough to study the star but JUST IN CASE the mission should lead to contact with alien life, hows about we add someone qualified to deal with that to the team.

You can see an explosion on earth in the trailer. The original astronaut team that were scheduled to accompany Ryland were all killed in that explosion, and a substandard group of replacements was hastily assembled. They did not have the right genes to survive the drug-induced coma and died en route.

>just in case they encounter aliens

Making first contact was never even a consideration for anybody on earth. Zero contingencies for this were made.
