Viets were fighting a noble war that to this day gives them a sense of pride. Americans were denied any feeling of purpose or worth so in their eyes they were watching friends die for nothing.

It was also a foreign land with strange customs and booby traps for the Americans, kind of like a really bad dream. Lastly American culture is more feminine about war, our media hammered them with the sense that they needed to be broken and traumatized and they internalized all of that.

Vietnam was two countries, North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The north was a communist nation backed by China and the south was a capitalist democracy with western values. The south had a booming economy and the north invaded the south. It was a straight up communist nation invading another nation that had long historical ties with France and other NATO members. The result was the unification of the north and south and it's celebrated as Unification Day in Vietnam. The people who were alive in Vietnam during the war from the south are quick to point out that their country went to shit fast after the north took over.

The S. Vietnamese state wasn't legitimate and folded immediately on its own legs. The Vietnamese barely even cared about the communist component, they were nationalists first and foremost and it was a protracted war that had started against the French. It was handled poorly, but Southern Vietnam was allied with NATO members without officially being a part of NATO and requested aid after an unprovoked attack on its citizenry by a hostile nation backed by the CCP.
