How did they take a show about running a sandwich shop and familial grief and turn it into a show about food autism and awkward millennial flirting?

Season 3 had only one plotline, which was just good enough for one episode - will the magical black girl sign the contract or not. In season 4 this is STILL not resolved, pure insanity.

LET ME FIX YOUR SHOW FOR YOU

>Carmy, a gifted chef who attempted suicide after his restaurant owning brother was killed by his drug dealing buddies, comes home at his family's urging to fix the sandwich shop his brother was using as a front for his drug dealing
>Season 1 is the struggle by Carmy to adjust to the unfamiliar world of slop cooking and running a restaurant
>also, the employees all fucking hate him, especially after he starts firing the gold bricks
>Richie leads the mob of haters
>Season 2 is Carmy finally getting a good team of employees together after magic black girl arrives on the scene with some of her competent crew
>Richie straightens out
>but the restaurant is in deep financial trouble
>reluctantly, Carmy asks for a loan from his mobster uncle
>Season 3, the restaurant is now on firm ground and even paying back his uncle's loan
>but his uncle wants to use it as to launder money, too
>Carmy's recovering alcoholic mom, finally confronts him, worried that Carmy might attempt suicide again
>Carmy decides to pursue his foo-foo restaurant idea that's been teased since season 1
>Season 4, the struggles of running a sandwich shop by day and a foo-foo restaurant by night
>Carmy briefly calls it quits to get his head straight, leaving magic black girl in charge
>Season 5, the entire staff sweats the critic's reception
>Carmy returns
>happy ending as the restaurant finally finds its balance

Really, this plot is obvious af and the show writes itself, but the writing staff is fucking incompetent.

this show has a tryhard comfy atmosphere. retro urban looks and photography, good music. some good themes, like grief and someone verbally abused becoming the abuser. but the writing sucks ass.

- le threatening mafia is actually... our loving uncle. AAAAH HELP ME UNCLE GIVE ME MONEY
- fucking tomato cans
- endless cycle of nothing happening
- everyone is a semi-mary sue, meaning offscreen or sped up training and working hours transform you into michelin star material

don't get me wrong, I still like the show for what it is, I'm watching season 4. But sometimes it's like ozark levels of naive writing.

it's a show primarily watched by aging millennial white collar hipsters so that's the audience it caters to

Basically a good take, I feel very frustrated by writers these days. Problem with Gen Xlennial writers is they are very... maybe insulated is the word? I don't know but they seem to get "the yips" if you will and take advice really personally. So the studio said we need more seasons and they then panicked and decided to circle the drain instead because they keep thinking "I am compromising my values i am sad i say fuck you to studio grr, I am not compromising hey yeah if I just indulge myself in writing a bunch of silly bullshit"

I don't even see 5 seasons to become Michelin Star though.

3) Finale they get Star
4) Carmy mother dies and he nearly loses it all in grief
5) Gets star back and becomes famous, now the story is about being a Celebrity Chef and leaving your friends behind, will he won't he
6) He starts a top 100 Restaurant in the country raising a family in a more chill setting like Indiana somewhere.
7) He finally dies in some tragic way shortly after beating his personal demons THE END

You could easily even extend this show

my issue is the awful conversational style that everyone talks in.
>so um..yea..so... like.. are we going to...um make a new food... or.... like.... i dont know.... think of something... else?

>uhh yeah.. okay yeah... sounds good, i mean.. well okay.. sure. okay got it

i actually miss proper dialogue

I agree with the OP and I also think that this show is overall B grade - overrated(but not very bad).

The lack of any real resolution is frustrating; for example, in that famous one-take episode, a problem pops up, everyone yells, and then it just ends with no payoff.

Overall, the whole template has become tiresome by now. Everyoneโ€™s constantly nervous and yelling over nothing, which gets old fast. On top of that, the cameos feel way too gimmicky and distracting.

I watched the first two episodes and I didn't understand why they were yelling at each other. The restaurant appeared to just be sandwich shop so I don't know why they had so many staff and everyone was acting so aggro. I've worked in places like that before and it was hard work but everyone was chill.

Season 1 was good but then it got overhyped and grew a new fanbase so they started appealing to letterboxd whores (women), happens to most shows that get popular

I went to a local sandwich shop last week, steve's sandwiches, the eponymous Steve was an cool old white guy working the cash register and the only other employee i saw was a 20s zoomer lady who made my sandwich. Neither was screaming CHEF but maybe that was because there was a ceasefire at the time.

I couldn't even finish the first episode, the camera was whipping around like they got your uncle with cerebral palsy to do the cinematography. Every show that does that gets dropped by me, keep the camera still and stop hiding behind disingenuous methods to mask the fact that your acting and writing suck

The writers had enough ideas for 1 good season. The execs want as many seasons as it takes until normies realise it's bad. The money in cans should have been a psychosis dream and season 2 should have opened with Carmy being put in the mental ward, then the final episode of season 2 should have been Carmy overdosing on cocaine after failing to keep the restaurant open.
