In hindsight it was pretty obvious that there was no "plan" and the show writers just threw shit at the wall and went with everything that sticked.
And i still cant get over how retarded the whole "lets give up all our technology and live with the caveman" ending is.

They were trying to give their journey some kind of meaning while making it profound, but it just ended up looking insanely stupid.

Had they shown them entering Earths solar system/orbit in our current time, it would have been even more profound in my opinion because of the immediate and obvious implications that would have dawned on all of the characters and the audience.
