It takes the complete opposite direction the previous 24 episodes were going. Shinji had pretty much completed his arc and became an actualized adult by overcoming all the angels and killing Kowaru, yet End of Eva starts like Shinji is back at episode 1 and is just completely incapable of handling all this shit he had grown through and resolved in previous episodes. Great movie, but it completely subverts the progress of the show, and it definitely carries some amount of resentment and punishment towards the audience, who the writers now abuse and accuse directly through Shinji

I think you should rewatch the show. Shinji doesn't have a linear arc, the show takes a more realistic approach where events occur and cause psychological progress and regression. The first 16 episodes are Shinji going through a the generic power fantasy arc, but episodes 16 through to 24 his shit is constantly getting fucked up, relationships deteriorating, everything falling apart. All his progress by episode 16 was undone by episode 24, his last hope was resting on Kaworu, so when he was forced to kill him Shinji became mega depressed and that leads into EoE.

I actually don't get this assessment at all, because to me it seems like killing Kaworu is the lowest point in his arc. Both the final episodes of the TV series and the film are concerned with changing Shinji's headspace after this.

The real narrative issue with 24 is how Kaworu is introduced and killed within the same episode, and how it's basically a retread of the same plot point that happened with Toji earlier in the series.

episodes 25 and 26 are just character breakdowns, basically occurring backstage after the show. Each character (not just Shinji) explains and defends their development process from the beginning. End of Evangelion has Shinji actually revert his entire arc right there in the story, and he fails every single challenge that he had succeeded at in the past, over and over again up until the very end when he finally decides he wants to live. Kaworu shows up and for the it is the first time Shinji experiences genuine unconditional affection from another person. Then all of a sudden he has to kill his friend, just like he experienced with Toji. That's going to cause a lot of psychological despair. Soldiers who fight in just wars experience a similar level of PTSD to those who fought in unpopular wars, so whether or not it was the right thing to do doesn't matter. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is also one of the greatest films of all time and should not be excluded from the discussion just because there's a little bit of homework.

I knew someone who watched End of Eva without having seen the show and she seemed to have mostly positive things to say about it. I wouldn't recommend it, but it does happen.

I watched this show when it was originally airing. I thought Shinji was a whiny faggot and I hated the show.

I rewatched it during covid lockdown and I completely and fully understood it for the first time. Precisely because I'm now in my 30s with a lot of life experience. I now know exactly what Shinji was going though.

I'm about to rewatch the series and then go for the rebuild movies for the first time, hope they're decent but don't expect a lot. I feel like Evangelion and EoE was this lightning he rode in this certain state of mind he had during that time. A 'one and done' kind of thing.
Watched the original series once during my teens, so I only remember the key plot points. I also remember Shinji being a pussy, Asuka a bully wallowing in self pity and Misato a nympho.

As for EoE, I liked how the lack of budget gave the movie this abstract, stylized feel. Only didn't like the live-action footage and dialog at the end.

Kowaru doesn't know what he wants. He's an artificial clone like Rei and has programming, but he also takes a liking to Shinji on his own initiative.
