>Don Draper's ''Old Fashioned'' drink typically includes: 2 ounces of rye whiskey (or bourbon), a sugar cube or 1/2 teaspoon of sugar, 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters, and a lemon or orange twist for garnish.

why was such a manly chad drinking such a sugary sweet drink?

It was a staple whiskey drink at the time and he mostly ordered it at restaurants or bars. It was also considered a more masculine drink, women rarely drank it. Most of the time he just drank rye (Canadian Club) neat or with ice.

He said Don drops his g's. That's not a fake accent. Don never puts on an accent, he talks at 19 the same way he does at 39. What he did was learn to speak well. This even pops up with him correcting the janitor kid in season 7.
