Gifted precocious children are heroes because they're tragic. Intelligence makes them more perceptive than some adults but their inexperience means they have no filters. They're powerless and subject to being overruled by adults that resent them or are dismissive of them. On top of that, they're surrounded by peers their own age that are stupider and meaner. They are literally better than most people but they're in an almost universally hostile environment.


The dramatic tension is seeing whether they make it to adulthood with minimal damage so that they can deliver on their potential to do great good for the world. Or maybe a hostile and ugly world makes them bitter way too young.

Wednesday acts like a jaded goth, Matilda is very much a kid, Summer is a teacher's pet, I don't remember the next one, Hermione is a bossy nerd, Chloe swore a lot I guess, Laura acted like a feral animal, Arya wasn't mature at all, she was just tomboyish, Eleven also isn't mature at all, she's stunted and stilted.

So I don't get where the "mature" thing is coming from.

All of the characters are presented as gifted and wise beyond their years. Arya was tomboyish but this is presented as shrewd awareness to the follies of her girlish older sister. Eleven especially in the later seasons is presented as a kind of moral leader who is wise beyond her years due to her powers and traumatic past. Wednesday is constantly deconstructing the behavior of humanity and adults around her. I could go on. The only one that doesnt really fit is X-23 but she is a fearless killer which could be seen as a form of maturity.

No they are not. Summer isn't any smarter than the other kids, she's just a swot looking for maximum credits/points. Matilda is a kid thrust into a difficult situation neither she nor her guardian are really prepared for. X-23 being a killer is very much not presented as a good thing or a sign of healthiness, she was raised as a weapon instead of as a kid, her getting to have a real life is the happy part of the film's ending. Same as Matilda actually, she specifically doesn't wind up like Leon, which is a good thing.

I also don't get "wiser" from Eleven, rather her morality is very simplistic and black and white, since she only learned it later from other kids, and she's very stunted herself. While it makes her uncompromising compared to adults it's not a wiser thing.
